So this upcoming Monday Ill finally have time to watch my first high def movie. Theres only one problem: I don't know which to get. There are a long list of blu-ray's out right now and I want to find one that has both the audio and video mastered rather well.

I have heard good things about the Pirates of the Caribbean movies but was wondering about some others as I have heard some are not mastered so well.

Anyone have suggestions on what movie I should use to pop my high def cherry?

We only have a few but Kingdom of Heaven and the Fantastic Four are likely the best we have seen so far.

Those are both great pics...

I have both BluRay & HD-DVD and I must say that the best one's I've seen are Planet Earth and U2 Rattle & Hum.

For some reason I thought planet earth was HD DVD only. That is very tempting.

The Prestiege has INCREDIBLE picture quality. Not much in the way of sound though.

POTC - Black Pearl does look very good.

My personal recommendation for picture AND sound, (if you have HDMI audio for the PCM track), is Blackhawk Down.

Both of the Pirates look good; picked them up on sale this past weekend. I second Kingdom of Heaven, looks spectacular and not a bad flick and excellent sound.

If you want a good idea of what to check out and what not to.... http://www.highdefdigest.com/ Has some pretty good reviews.

Here is a Tier list for Blu-ray

(PCM) refers to uncompressed audio tracks. This is a lossless audio codec which provides crystal clear sound.

(THD) refers to TrueHD. This is a lossless audio codec which provides crystal clear sound.

(MA) refers to DTS Master Audio. DTS-HD Master Audio is a form of lossless packing (aka zip) used to deliver surround audio that is bit-for-bit identical to the original studio master. Current players are only able to decode the core 1.5mbps DTS signal provided for backward compatibility. Future players, as well as some existing players with a future software update, will decode the full extension track with the higher-fidelity DTS-HD Master Audio.

(BW) refers to Blu-Wizard. This is an interactive overlay in which you can check off a list of features to view. They will then apear during playback of the film at the relevant times.

(IME) refers to In Movie Experience, which is a term for HD DVD picture-in-picture functionality. I'm just using it here unless/until BD comes up with its own term. As of right now, BD-j, the overlay system that allows this feature, is not fully functional. As a intermediate solution, a seperate encode for the entire movie including the picture-in-picture information is also available seperate on the disc.

(Bobbed) is an upconverting from 1080i process some masters at WB underwent. It reduces vertical resolution and introduces "jaggies" (stair-stepping).

I have Corpse Bride and I would say it is definitely one of the cleanest I've seen. I haven't seen A Scanner Darkly, but it is on my list based on the review.

Thanks for all the help. I never realized how much people review everything but I guess I never thought about it much. I am just excited fto play with my new toy. Pirates seem to be a good choice then.

Some of the scenes in the newest 007 movie are very impressive, it also has good surround material. Mission Impossible III is one of the best Blu-ray discs I've watched, It should be on your list as well. I would also recommend Planet Earth, aside from the spectacular footage it is pretty enjoyable to watch.

Taken as a whole the current Blu-Ray list of movies leaves much to be desired. The selection will need to take off substantially to make this format anything but a playtoy for videophiles. My son (26) was also not impressed with the available selections so I don't think it is an age thing. Why is the Spiderman series of blockbusters not on Blu-Ray? This whole HD movie idea needs a jump-start besides the evolution to middle-class pricing.
