Blu ray sound to DVDR

Newbe here. I have a problem. An 09 Panasonic TC P58V10, Panasonic SC BT300 7.1 surround and a Panasonic DMR E50 DVDR (03 model), and cable. I want to record a DVD from the Blu ray to the DMR E50. Here's how it's set up now: audio from BR to TV thru HDMi, component video out of the BR directly to DVDR, and audio using the "amp out" L&R audio jacks on the TV. The TV is on when I'm recording, I can see it, hear it... but when I play it back on my DVDR, there isn't any sound. WHY? Is it because the TV will not let the analog through, it wants to use only HDMi? Is there a way around that? Oh, and to lety you know, out of the 15-20 times I tried this, 3 times it has worked perfectly. Why is that? Someone please help find an answer!!

Hi and welcome to Audioholics,

My brother has a similar system than yours, and encountered similar problems.

* I'll say that you need to take some time to read all the manuals, and get familiar with all the features; it's certainly not for the faint of heart.
There is a solution for sure, but it's a question of setting everything just right.
It is indeed quite complex. TAKE YOUR TIME trying to understand the right connections and settings, plus the right buttons clicking on the remote.

I wish I can help you pinpoint the problem, but my experience with your components is too restricted. Hopefully someone will be able to help you more precisely.

P.S. For recording on your DVR, you can use the analog out from your Blu-ray player directly, or the digital out (coax or opt). Copy protection might stop you recording from the HDMI connection (for the high res, audio codecs for sure).
And I don't think you can record DD or DTS as well. Again, copy protection.
So, Stereo digital or analog are your options, and it's always best to record directly from the source (component's connection directly to your DVR).

Cheers,
Bob

Thanks for your input. My SC BT300 Panasonic 7.1 surround systems doesn't have analog AUDIO out. And my DMR E50 Panasonic DVDR doesn't have any HDMi connections. I have looked all over the net, called Panasonic several times... they seemed impressed that WE (my brother-in-law) actually hooked it up like he did AND found all the litle menus and options "hidden" away to get as far as WE did. He gets 100% of the credit. I just want to push record & it work!! As to why it works sometimes and not others...I don't know. I don't have a bit of problem recording from On Demand Comcast movies. L3 & it's ready to go. But to record a dvd to a dvd.... the sound just isn't there. Well it's there alright...is it the sequence... it is that the HDMi overrides the analog???
STILL LOOKING FOR HELP, please.

This is a copy right protection issue. With the equipment you have what you want to do is not possible, unless you record unprotected material.

Hollywood have threatened the manufacturers with huge lawsuits if they set up equipment to do what you want to do easily. In order to do this you need a player that will output analog audio and video.

HDMI is copyright protected through HDCP codes. If a TV receives a copyrighted flagged disc via HDMI, it can not allow you to make a copy and must prevent pass through of either video, audio or both to the outputs of the device.

A DVD recorder is not allowed to have an HDMI input, only an output. The reason, copy righted material must not be able to be copied via HDMI.

Thanks again for the answer. I'm beginning to see your point about the HDMi. I can't understand why it worked those few times it did. I was able to record 2 Christmas movies. Then nothing since. I really thought it might be the sequence of turning on the TV, then the BR, then the DVDR....and I lucked out those times with the correct one, not knowing it was the reason. Sending the sound to the TV via HDMi, but the TV should transfer over to analog when the DVDR is recording (L1) ... the HDMi shouldn't come into play, right? Because I can get VIDEO, just no sound. And I can record off cable.

If the TV is following current codes, then it should not output a signal you can copy from a copyright protected source from HDMI. It must block video, audio or both. I suspect what you recorded before did not have HDCP copy protection flags.

OK, problem over. I didn't want to have to have 3 DVD players on my mantel, BUT.... I did end up hooking my Sony DVD player up to the DVDR & I'm back!! Thanks for all the the help and suggestions.
