Blu-ray setup question

Hello there, first time post

I am interested in getting a Blu-ray player but I am not sure if I can do the following:

Equipment:
Toshiba Cinema series 50", HD ready but only excepts composite, SVHS and component
Pioneer SC-07
All connections pass through the Pioneer

I am wondering if I get a Blu-ray player, will I be able to use the HDMI out for the higher resolution audio and still use the componet out for the video? Will I be able to configure my SC-07 to use the HDMI in for audio only and use component for video on the Blu-ray imput. I need this setup as the SC-07 will not down convert HDMI to component and my TV only has up to component as imput.

Hmmm... if I were you, I might skip on the blu-ray player for now, unless you plan on upgrading your TV. Not sure if that TV supports 1080p or not, but if it's the one I'm thinking of I'd have to say probably not - and it's 4:3 aspect ratio as well. For the blu-ray player to be really worth your money it might be wise to consider this. I believe you can do what you are asking with utilizing the audio for the lossless formats via HDMI to your Pioneer, depends on the blu-ray player you get and if it has the ability to split the A/V signals according to this configuration. Then you'd at least have your BD player and could upgrade the TV at a later time. Maybe someone can chime in and either confirm or correct me on this though. :)

No that TV does not support 1080p, maybe 1080i but not sure. Would have to find the manual. I have my video output set to 720p currently and the picture is a lot better. The TV is 4:3 as well. I have an older DVD player that is not even progressive. I am thinking of the Blu-ray as they are starting to really drop in price and I could at least get the audio side of it, maybe??. A new TV is in the future but not right now.

BTW, I am thinking about the Panasonic DMP-BD35

If the TV only does 1080i then you should be OK as long as the player has component. Component will pass 720p / 1080i. No you won't be able to get the newest audio formats because if your receiver doesn't have HDMI, you can't pass them. If your receiver has multichannel analog inputs then you can send them out from a player with them, but that would mean stepping up to the BD55 as the 35 does not have them.

I don't have any experience with the BD-35, but I know a lot of people on this form own one, so you're in the right place to ask the right questions about whether it can split the signal the way you need for now. :) Forum seems a little slow right now, most likely because of Christmas right around the corner, so stick with it, and give this thread a little bump in a few days if nobody else has replied. ;) :) Happy holidays!

Thx for the replies and yes Merry Christmas.

My reciever is the Pioneer SC-07, so it does have HDMI in. I guess I need to check my manual to see if I can split the audio\video imput for Blu-ray. Just hoping that someone can confirm that for me. Someone mentioned to me that the Blu-ray player may send the vidoe through HDMI and component at the same time. But I am guessing that it would be something that would need to be assigned. Hopefully I can get some confirmation on this.

I don't know for a fact that the BD35 will output both HDMI and component simultaneously, but if it doesn't it would be the first player of any kind that didn't.

In your situation I would recommend stepping up the BD55 to take advantage of the analog preouts.

thx for the replies. If I understand correctly, using the analog preouts would allow my deck to do most of the processing? So this would actually end up giving me even better sound?

In my last response I was going by previous posts, bad assumptions, and my own stupidity. I didn't look at your receiver.

The BD35 will work just fine for you. Your receiver decodes the latest audio formats, and the BD35 will bitstream them via HDMI.

Send the audio to the receiver thru HDMI and the video to the TV thru component and you should be good to go.
