Blu ray audio over optical vs standard DVD audio

Is there a difference in audio quality between blu ray audio over a optical cable vs that from a standard dvd player? Both would be used in a 5.1 system. Do you basically get standard dvd audio quality/performance if you use a audio optical cable or digital audio cable with a blu ray player? Thanks.

Yes there is. Even when selecting the higher formats over optical, you will get a higher bitrate version of dd/dts vs what is available on most DVDs. DD should stream at 640k and dts is often 1509k (otherwise known as full bitrate). What you won't be able to get are the lossless versions of these tracks. Depending on the track, the audio may be improved vs what you heard on DVD, though with some well recorded tracks that difference may not be as big. I have a feeling others will argue this, but in my experience with Blu-ray so far, there is an audible improvement even via optical as that is how I have my PS3 setup since I don't have HDMI on my receiver.

There may be AQ differences but you may not be able to tell the differences. I don't understand what you meant by "a audio optical cable or digital audio cable". Digital audio cable could be coaxial or optical.

Not sure. I am going to research this point, but I don't think there is any difference in audio quality between blue ray and standard ray. Video quality is another thing. The ability to read audio signal and the D/A converter is the same in both system. 24 bit/96khz. Please, clarify me if I am wrong!!!
P/S I read a little bit about this and found that if you play a HD DVD with HD DD or HD dts, you get hd sound. Probably a better sound than standard DD and DTS, never hear it. But, playing an standard dvd or cd, the sound quality is the same as red ray players.
