First, is the price difference between blu ray and hd-dvd worth it?

Second, does blue-ray play normal DVD's? I heard it may not, but not from a very reliable source.

Thanks!

There is very little difference between the two formats. PLayers for bot formats play DVDs just fine. What you need to look at is who has the titles you want more, since many are not available on both.

Yeah, I picked Blu-ray at first because most of the movies I liked are only on Blu-ray. Then I bought HD DVD because I just had to have those exclusive-HD DVD movies. But now I learn that you can pretty much get any format from those foreign sources (Europe)---like some of those exclusive-blu-ray movies here in the US are available as HD DVD in Europe and vice versa! And they are not region specific so you can play them in any blu-ray or hd dvd players.

So check out the available movies first. Then pick the HD player.

All blu-ray and hd dvd players should be able to play DVD-video.

what you may be thinking is DVD-r.
And or CDs (CD-r)

Some of the first Sony Blu-Ray players had lots of trouble playing those formats, downright NOT playing them.

Blu-Ray in general is regional coded, HD DVD is not.

As for the difference in the HD PQ, there is little difference, choose what movies you like.
As for a locked standard, everything should work, go with HD DVD.

As for what has the potential (years later) for better quality, then go Blu-Ray.

Hope that did not confuse more....
