Blown drivers or problems with reciever?

Bare with me please as I'm new to posting and have a confusing situation at hand. O have recently purchased a Fluance Rt85 turntable and since my home theater avr has no phono preamp I also purchased a vintage Yamaha stereo receiver. The guy I got the Yamaha from threw in a pair of Technics floor speakers, nothing special but sound ok. I got curious to see what my Klipsch R28f towers would sound like through the Yamaha. They sound incredible with my Denon 90 watt per channel but with the Yamaha rated at 100 watts the upper 8 in. drivers in both towers sound completely blown,go back to the Denon and they are fine. I doubt its too much power as the Technics speakers are only 60 watts rms and I never turned the Yamaha half as loud with the Klipsch, just sounded terrible immediately. Hopefully someone here has an idea of what is going on because I'm at a loss. Thanks in advance.

Why didn't you just get a stand alone phono pre-amp? :) The Technics speakers sound similar on both receivers? What Technics speakers are they particularly? The difference in power stated is fairly negligible. What specific Yamaha and Denon units are you using? Speaker max power ratings are more a limit guideline rather than what they need or will sound good with.....are you maxing out the volume dial in using the speakers or something?

Vintage Yamaha receiver is the culprit.

Power ratings (90W, 100W, etc.) are marketing jibberrish and have nothing to do with problem you describe.

Plenty of phono preamps on Amaz for $15 and up.

Technics SB-K22,the Denon is an avrS920w,and the Yamaha is a 1978 CR-2020. Never had the volume above 3,as soon as the music started it was obvious something wasn't right. The lower drivers in the towers sounded fine just the upper 8 in. that sounded shot in both. As far as a stand alone pre-amp, when I got the turntable almost 2 years ago I got a pair of Klipsch the sixes to use for vinyl. Sound great, but then it is my first vinyl setup and everyone online was bashing the built in phono in the sixes so I figured I'd start looking for something to try out and came across the Yamaha, too cool to pass up

So the Technics speakers sound fine on either receiver? Just the Klipsch sound odd? Are you using the bi-wiring terminals or something along those lines?

I didn't get far enough to try the Technics on the Denon but as for bi-wiring I only did a standard connection with the factory Klipsch jumper plate

Well if you hook up the Technic speakers to both units I suspect, like eaglexdriver, that your Yamaha is the culprit. You need to whittle down the possibilities....but can't think of why the lower drivers are fine and the upper not....

Doesn't make any sense to me. Its not a huge deal. My home theater sounds fine, and my 2 ch. Sounds fine. Just can't interchange the equipment. Was curious to see how making changes to the lineup would alter the sound. I appreciate your time and effort though.
