I have a question. If I have bipolars in a 7.1 surround setup, do I put them in the rear or on the side. What about in a 5.1 setup. Do they go on the side or behind me? Finally if they are on the side, which direction do they face, towards the couch or towards the tv.

Thanks

Here a couple links to cover speaker placement:

Since you want a diffuse sound from your surrounds, place them so that the drivers are facing the front and back walls when the speakers are placed on the side walls. If the speakers are on the back wall, the drivers should point towards the side walls. Basically you don't want either of the opposing drivers aimed at you.

Your best bet for dipole surrounds is to place them to your sides instead of behind you. I have found that anywhere from parallel to 1 or 2 feet behind the listening position are where you will achieve your best results. Keep the speakers as far away from the wall to maximize the dipole effect. A little experimentation will help you find the best location for your taste. Dipoles are harder to set up correctly, but when they are the benefits are simply amazing. Happy Listening.
