... so to speak.

Ok, so I have dedicated $4K for the Samy 1080p dlp and now need to get a receiver. Was looking at the Yamaha line 1500/2500 but there are no HDMI or DVI I/O. Am I wasting my time looking for a bargain receiver or have I failed to understand what I truly need to get this tv to perform.

The new Yamaha 4600 supports HDMI. Also, the new Denons coming out, the 3806 and 4306, have HDMI connections. Of the 3, the 3806 is closest to your price range.

The 3806 will be out next month and will retail for 1299, well within you price range

The receiver is way down the food chain on what impacts the sound in your listening room. First is speaker choice, second is room acoustics, third is the media and way down in a distent fourth is the receiver. 60% or so of your total audio system budget should go to speakers IMO. So the question is what is your total audio system budget and what speakers do you have?

Perhaps you can connect a DVD player directly to the TV? That is an option.

Depending on the speaker system you will have, your receiver needs to drive them. Don't let the tail wag the dog :D

Thanks for all your help. I am dealing with very active room acoustics in another section.

In response to some questions:

My speakers are Fluance Sx-HTB.

Yes, of course I can plug the Dvd directly into the Samy but, I was hoping to route through the receiver and streamline the system.

I would recommend the new Onkyo TXNR1000. That thing is virtually future proof. If something new comes along beyone HDMI, which I don't see, then it is ready. But formats like IEEE 1394 come equipped, It would be an addition that would put you at ease, and it has plenty of power

It doesn't matter if you route HDMI through the receiver if the receiver doesn't convert all the material to HDMI format, you are still stuck switching your TV and receiver to a new input when you have an HDMI source. The BEST way to streamline your setup is to get a good universal remote that will do everything for you. So, you don't get stuck explaining 10,000 times what you need to do to switch from cable to DVD to gaming. In a really high end system, Crestron & AMX are used, but a Harmony remote may be the ticket for a TRUE streamlined setup, then everything else you can focus on doing the best way possible for ultimate image and sound quality.

I would skip looking for HDMI switching right now and if you need it later, pick up a Gefen HDMI switcher for your needs. Let the receiver handle component, s-video, and composite and ALL your audio needs. Mostly about your audio needs.

1080P sources

Here are currently no sources that support the 1080P max resolution of your new TV. When Blue-Ray and HD-DVD hardware and software eventually make it to market, you could always connect the player directly to the TV.

The Yamaha RX-V2500 is a great receiver and also makes a great PreAmp/Processor. You could always enjoy this HT setup now and purchase a seperate HDMI switch box should you need it in the future.

In your 4K display budget I would also take a look at DLP projector like the BenQ PE7700 ($2500) which are capable of >100" screen size @ 720P vs. a 50-60" plasma or rear projector.

Perhaps I'm going to let my ignorance shine, not having any HDMI components, but my understanding was that it doesn't necessarily provide any upgrade in sound quality over say, optical and component cables, it merely provides the convenience of being able to combine that all in one cord. Assuming I'm accurate in that... how important is it to be an all-in-one cable?

HDMI with sound

I know that HDMI is capable of transmitting digital audio over the cable. However, does any one have an HDMI 1.1 receiver and a source that has this feature and is utilizing it?
I know that some of the newest receivers offer the HDMI switching function but I am not sure if any of them can pick up the audio off the cable. It might require a future version of HDMI (1.2?) to utilize this feature.

Edit: Found another thread with HDMI info.
HDMI 1.0 = Video and Dolby Digital 5.1 / DTS compressed audio
HDMI 1.1 = 6 channel 96kHz DVD-Audio
HDMI 1.2 = SACD
