Big Dilemma: Please Help!

I'm a novice at this, so bear with me.

The components:

Sanyo PLC-XU350 projector
LG DVD Player
Mackie SRM350 v2

The problem: severely fuzzy, muffled sound
Connection: female XLR/RCA male

When playing a DVD, the only audio I get from the Mackie is when I plug the RCA plug into an "digital audio" jack on the DVD player. Connecting the RCA plug into the RCA jacks either on the DVD player or the projector yields no sound at all. But, as said, what audio I do get from the audio digital jack is really terrible and useless. Do I need a preamplifier or mixer? What am I doing wrong? I was hoping for booming, clear sound.

There's another Mackie connection in the back: an input connector that is "a combination female XLR-type and TRS connector that accepts a balanced or unbalanced mic or line-level signal." Would this make a difference?

Thanks!

Yeah, me again.

I'm fast learning the input connector situation as stated above. Sorry to sound so hopelessly dumbass.

I solved it. Very simple, very easy in retrospect.

I am justly humiliated by my initial ignorance, but will now fearlessly continue with my audio journey.

;)
