I would like to know what you guys think about your modified BIC's. I'm currently using DV62's for mains and a DV62CLRS for a center. I just ordered some DV64 to use for mains, and the bookshelves will be moved to surrounds. I like the way they sound now, but would like to get some opinions from those that have listened to both the modified and unmodified speakers. Do any of you wish that you didn't modify them? I've only come across one review that preferred the unmodified version with the L-pads.

Thanks

I think the mod for the center is a must. The vocals wil be much cleaner. The midbass improves a ton too. I don't know about the surrounds, I didn't mind them before the mod, they were a little bright to me. If you like the way they sound, don't get them done. I have no idea about the DV64's. I'd love to hear your impression of them when you get them though.

In my e-mail communications with Ed Frias, he recommends listening to them for a bit and see if you like them. If you do, keep them as is. If you feel they are missing something, spend the $30-50 a pair and get them modded.

I am anxious to hear you impression of the 64's. I have not seen any reviews on them. I would think they will be amazing, as they are like doubling the midbass portion on the 62! I would also love to compare them to the HT-75's, but do not have any dealers near me:(

I had an email conversation with Ed about 2 years ago when I first bought the dv62si, and he said the same thing (if you're happy with the sound, leave them as they are). Needless to say, I never got around to shipping the crossovers to him. Now, with the recent purchase of the DV64, I'm interested in having the mods done to all 5 speakers. To me they sound great, but the posibility that they could sound even better is what tempts me.

I'll post a review when I receive the DV64's which should be sometime next week. I'm anxious to hear how they perform against the DV62's. I'm assuming that they should perform as good or better than the bookshelves, plus I'll have more placement options since there isn't a vent in the rear.

BIC Frias Mod Options

I have recently had an e-mail conversation with Ed about the mods and his opinion about different front speaker configurations. For the relatively small price difference (since I don’t already have the speakers) I am seriously considering getting the speakers directly from Ed. The ones he sells have his “extensive mods” which includes testing, matching, higher quality components in the crossovers and other things. I have attached his descriptive doc (for those of you who haven’t seen this take a look, it’s pretty interesting in general.)

He strongly recommended getting 3 of the DV62CLR’s for the 3 fronts. Here's a quote from his e-mail

"With a good sub you really don't need the tower speakers, I recommend the modified DV-64's when listening to two channel stereo only without a sub. With a good subwoofer, the extensively modified DV-62si in front and rear are more than sufficient. If you prefer a little larger soundstage and more dynamics, then my next recommendation is going with three extensively modified DV-62CLRS center speakers for the front and the 62 bookshelfs for the rear! When using three MTM designed speakers for fronts, you have 9 drivers that produce a very big soundstage and are able to take much more power without distortion. The CLRS center speaker actually has the same three active drivers as the DV-64 towers, without the extra two passive radiators and the larger cabinet. For that reason, the center speaker is actually cleaner and the subwoofer takes care of all the deeper bass. In this last year several BIC customers have bought the three center speakers for the front and believe they sound better than many speakers they've owned costing much more."

But in my case I really would like to have floor standing L-R speakers for aesthetic reasons and to avoid the hassle of having to get stands for the DV62’s, and mount them on end, which I think would not be very stable since they are so long. So I asked Ed about the combination of 1 DV62CLR and 2 DV64’s -- all of which would have his extensive mods – even the DV64’s. I e-mailed that idea to him, but he replied that in his opinion the configuration witht eh DV64's would be inferior to using 3 modified 62’s which provide a cleaner/better sound than the modified 64’s From a cost standpoint it’s a push ($560 plus shipping) considering that in addition to the speakers I’d have to buy stands for the 62’s as the L-R’s.

I may still go with the DV64's since I probably wouldn’t notice the difference (not being a true audiophile) and due to heavy WAF issues. But I thought I would post this info and get some feedback. Has anybody heard the combination of 3 DV62 CLR’s as fronts?

Also – the other option I am seriously considering is getting the BIC Acoustech HT-75 (L-R) and HT-65 center. I’ve read probably everything on the Internet in all forums – especially this and AVS – but still can’t make up my mind. Need to pull the trigger by Monday and place an order with somebody.

Haven't pulled the trigger yet

No, I can't seem to make up my mind -- and in the meantime I still have a pair of old Fisher XP-7B's (3 way 12" - 4" - 1" ... I think) that (even after 30 years) still sound pretty darn good as a main L/R temporary solution. And since I have recently added the Pioneer VSX-72 receiver and a JBL S120PII sub, (both of which I like a lot) the current 2.1 setup actually sounds quite good -- so I'm not feeling desperate or anything.

As it turns out I probably won't order anything now for a couple more weeks because I'm leaving Thursday for a 10 day business trip to England and don't want to have stuff delivered while I'm gone since no one will be at the house during the day to accept delivery.

Once I make a decision and get the speakers installed I'll be sure to post back to everyone who has been helping me sort this out. It's all been very helpful. Thanks to everyone.

Re: the Frias doc attached to my previous post -- Yeah, I thought it was pretty interesting and informative. Glad you liked it.

Chiclets gladly accepted as thanks. Love that green gum!! :p

Prescott, AZ...hmmm, does he do this out of his house? Wonder if he would be willing to have someone by to demo both the stock and modded 62CLR side by side. I haven't heard either of them(modded or not) but the 62CLR are my top choice right now.

I think he would. I have read other posts where people have said they visited his place. In fact one even said Ed came to his house for something.

I wish I was close enough to have the opportunity.

Why not just e-mail him and ask?

Well, I received one DV64 on the 28th of October and the other one showed up on Friday after getting re-routed back to the sender and then back to me. It showed up damaged. The top corners were smashed in, and now I'm waiting for the replacement. I'll give my impressions later this week on how they sound.
