Bic DV5312 vs. DV64/84 with BIC DV64CLR Center.

Hello all. I have been reading up on inexpensive speaer options and plan on upgrading my ghetto surround sound system. As of now I am using two aiwa bookshelves as mains with 2 sony bookshelves as the surround speakers. For the center I have two bose satalite speakers. (Ghetto). Currently the only thing going for me is that they are all connected to an Onkyo SR601 6.1 amp. I plan on purchasing the BIC DV62 Center channel because it is a wonderful price and has recieved great reviews everywhere I have read.
The question I have for the experienced audioholics of the forum is which tower speakers would you reccomend to accomidate the new center channel. I am considering the BIC DV5312, the DV64 and DV84 towers from BIC. I believe the difference between the two is the fact that the DV5312 has a built in 12in woofer, compared to dual 8in woofers in the 64 and 84s. I plan on using these tower speakers as my main R&L speakers for my 30in TV and to throw kick *** partys (loud music) in my college house. I will have the Aiwa bookshelves as my surrounds and the center for the voices. The room is pretty large and carpeted if it makes any difference. I do not plan on purchasing a seperate subwoofer for the .1 of my surround sound, but do not know if buying towers with a 12in woofer built in is a good idea. I understand that this is not an optimal situation for surround sound but hope someone has some suggestions to help me achieve the best surround sound system I can afford. Thank you

Dillyo

I think the DV64's are only 6.5" dual woofers with dual passive radiators. I'm also certain you'll want a little more bass than what the DV64's or even the DV84's put out. Dual 8" woofers are fine for tight bass, but for kick@ss frat parties, you'll want more bass. If they are out of your budget, definitely go with the DV84's. You can pick up a good 12" sub down the line for under $200.

This may be out of your budget range, but have you considered the Cerwin Vega CLSC 215's? They won't require a sub, and are much better for those parties you're talking about. http://www.cerwinvega.com/products/homeaudiovideo/index.html

I appreciate your reply. I am mainly concerned with the sound quality of the sound and not so much the loud bass. How are the Cervin Vegas? At some point down the road I will get a powered 12 but want to get set up with mains and center for now. Maybe a pair of bookshevles instead of the towers? I was under the impression that mixing speaker brands is not a good thing. Does Cervin make good centers? Thanks.

I don't think Cerwin even makes centers. Anyway, what is your budget, overall? You might be better off going with the Bic Acoustech line, they have higher efficiency horn tweeters that will let you rock harder with less power than the Venturi line. That said, they're more similar to Klipsch in sound and probably aren't as "musical" as the Venturi line. That isn't to say they sound like crap though. Check out a review here.

If you're truly concerned with timbre matching, then the BIK DV62CLR-S center matches up with the DV64s and DV84s. The DV5312 is matched to their DV53CLR center.

My budget is aprox. $400 dollars for the pair of mains and a center channel. I'm not so sure Im that concerned with timbre matching I just dunno if I should be. I will proably want to get the center that goes with the speakers which means I am now mainly debating the Acoustic and Venturi series speakers. I think the CW are alittle out of my price range. I was hoping someone could clear this up; When and where are horns or cones better? In one review it says imaging is better than with horns and in another it says they are too bright? I have to say though the Acoustic series is very appealing to the eyes. Ahh decisions decisions.

just to clarify, I'm going to continue reading up on the Venturi dv84 with dv62clr or the Acoustic Ht75 with ht65 center. basically, horns or the other softer thing :). BTW, what is imaging?? lol.

The imaging on the DV84 is great. I personally am not a big horn fan, You will want a horn in a room with a ton of acoustic absorber, but not want horns in a "hard" room (tile, wood, floors, your basic reflective type of surface). I think the venturi speakers are of higher quality than the acoustechs.

If you really want something that jams, get 2 DV62clr's (use as towers) and the V1220 sub. That is a darn good sounding setup for GP.

sounds like i plan. I think im going to go with the Venturi line for sure. Sounds like im going to need a sub though for the sound quality im looking for. McMann, is there an online retailer you could recommend that carries BIC? Thanks for all your help.

X10.com or amazon. That is where I have found the best deals. So which are you going for?

.....call it what you will, timbre or presence, but that's what you're wanting to achieve as one unit....it would be luck to go with different brands of speakers in a surround system and achieve the Live Presence possible with matched same-line components.....

I disagree mule. I think that if you have a good set of speakers that reproduce music and movies accurately, then any combo will work. This timbre matching is a French conspiracy against the free world.

Here's the link to the Center Channel. That's the best price I've found (and I plan on ordering one for myself here in the near future).

If you plan on getting the DV84 towers, then the best price is indeed at Amazon. And since you're getting the center too, they have a combo deal with free shipping that makes the center even cheaper than buying it "a la carte" from X-10. Keep in mind that the price of 146.99 is for ONE speaker, not a pair.

.....haha, I hear ya', Mac....I'll take combinations that were designed for grouped-together like-presence in the same lab....and I better say, probably.....

Awesome. You guys are great. Thank you so much for your advice. I'm placing my order for a pair of DV84's and a DV62CLR with Amazon.com. Im debating wether or not I want to spend another $188 for the 1220 sub which would complete my HT for now. Not so sure. Then down the line I can get a pair of DV62s for the surrounds and I'm sure that will be superb! Again, I must thank everyone on this board for supplying great information and generous feedback. I will definitly let you guys know how it turns out! Thanks
