Bic Acoustech Pl89s

I recently purchased a pair of Bic Acoustech pl89s for $370 shipped, I got an accompanying pl28 for $172. I was excited at first as I had read very few owner reviews but they were very positive.

I have had them about 3 weeks and have clocked easily 60 hours of music so far and only about 3 movies. I was really thrilled with how they sounded, but as I have read more I find there are many nay sayers that basically claim they are a complete ripoff and produce horrible sound. Someone went so far as to say that the pl89 5.1 set with pl200 was significantly worse than the Klipsch HD Theater 500 setup(which has only 2.5" woofers, and an 8" sub). Several have asserted that they are trash because no recognized AV publication will touch them for a review, "They are simply white van speakers".

I dont think my ears deceive me every time I use these speakers, is there any consensus among you who have used or heard the bic acoustechs? Am I really hearing rubbish?

If they sound good to your ears, nobody else's opinion matters. I own a set of the Klipsch SL's and use them in a 5.1 setup with a $99 Sony subwoofer and they sound amazing to my ears in that tiny bedroom of ours. The best part is I have a complete 5.1 system for $500!! There's plenty of folks that don't like the sound of horn-loaded speakers such as Klipsch, but they don't have to listen to them ...I do. I have even decided to go with Klipsch RF 63's for the den after going back and forth with Monitor Audio Siver series speakers.

Your speakers may not deliver the quality of sound compared to other mid priced speakers if you had the chance to compare them side by side but what you don't know, won't hurt. Just be happy with your BIC's and enjoy them.

Horn speakers

The Bics are fairly well made horn speakers that compare favorably to Klipsch which sell for about twice the price. I have a number of Klipsch units and my Brother has the BICs. I prefer both to many of the "favored" speakers on this site. My 10 year old Klipsch RB5s are still my mains in preference to similar sized Polks, Kefs and Praradigms for HT. If you like the sound, I would not panic.and no, yours are much better than the Klipsch 500 setup.....

If you haven't seen it yet, check out the BIC Acoustech thread at AVSforum, which has a lot of information. The Acoustechs do not look like bad speakers. They use the same tweeters as the Hsu speakers, which is what I have, and I think they sound terrific. Don't worry about what some Klipsch fanatic says. Klipsch has some very fervent followers, and I wouldn't be surprised if they badmouthed the BICs for daring to resemble Klipsch speakers. I also would not be surprised if the BICs sounded better than an equivalently priced Klipsch setup.
