Can somebody make a case for the superiority of speaker type for the rear surround in a 6.1 system? My ingenious idea of using a center channel speaker wasn't so ingenious afterall. :(

What about two monopole speakers, like a 7.1 configuration, with the two surround backs in mono?

The amp manufacturer actually suggests this by way of putting the back surround signal through a stereo amp. But because of room and WAF considerations, a single speaker is the "best" solution.

Oh, and I'm not certain of the relevance...but the back surround is 30 feet from the tv, and the listeners are at 12 feet. (All distances are correctly set via the receiver.)

May-be I'm misunderstanding the question....I'm using a center channel speaker for the rear center channel in my 8.1 system and it works good. I'm curious as to why you think yours doesn't sound so good.

I highly recommend a single Mirage Omnisat V2. Very small (and available in white), so WAF shouldnt be a problem. Technically they are not bipoles, dipoles, or monopoles. The midrange is aimed for a 70% direct, 30% reflected sound, while the tweeter is a true 360 degree radiator. You get the best aspects of all three different types of speakers, in a single, tiny package.

Seems that a little experimentatinon is required...
Here is a speaker that you can configure as either a Bipole or Dipole...

Also if speaker size is a problem, I have succesfully used a pair of Canton Plus XS for the rears,(actually for a 6.1 set up as well) they are the size of a CD case (front) That Should at least appease the WAF...

Cheers...

Dapper Dan... :)

I get a very little stage presence in the rear. The sound is really directional from that speaker. It's possible that is because it's a good deal of yards away from the side surrounds and the listeners. I guess that's why I'm thinking that a dipole would be the thing to try, but I dunno. Sound dispersion should be good from that center-channel speaker.

I didn't know that switchable bi/di-pole speakers were available. That's a cool thing I may have to try. (All brand suggestions are still appreciated.)
