Better sound from a CD player?

Are DVD players suitable for CD playback?
I mean, just because they CAN play CD's, do they produce the same result as a CD player?
My CD player died years ago. I've never replaced it with another CD player........only DVD players.
I have a very low end system.
Pioneer VSX 509S receiver and Pioneer 333 DVD player.
I'm definately replacing the receiver, but I'm wondering if I should add a CD player too.
Great sounding music is way more important to me than home theatre. My existing DVD player is fine for that.
I don't want to bring a new receiver home and not be able to realize it's potential because I'm using a crappy source.
So...........
Do I buy a receiver and judge it on my existing DVD player, or buy a new higher end DVD player, or add a CD player to the system?

<font color='#000000'>One you might consider is the Philips DVD 727, they're only about $80, (from Amazon):
Audio DAC: 192kHz/24-bit
Audio signal-to-noise ratio: 100 dB

It's been highly reccommended for its sound quality on some other discussion groups, though because of its light weight, they say you should put a book on it and mount it on rubber pads to damp it down.  Probably the biggest bang-for-buck if you want to spend under about $500.</font>

<font color='#8D38C9'>I've heard a lot of talk about mods to the Pioneer 563. &nbsp;Supposedly, even some big time audio journalists who've heard it have compared it favorably to players costing $10,000 more!

&nbsp; Shocking, but I've even heard whispers that it is competitive with the Meitner/Philips rig...

We're talking a $150 DVD player with about $500 in mods vs some players that cost almost as much as a entry level car.</font>
