Best Towers for Hip-hop/Rap?

Hello, I am an avid music fan and love everything from James Taylor to Wu-Tang Clan.

My Current Setup:
Quicksilver Line Preamplifier
ROTEL RB-991 Stereo Amplifier
and a pair of 1976 Big Box Advents.

I love Chick Corea and Jackson Browne, however, I also enjoy many contemporary 'rap' artists such as Kanye West and UGK.

the Advents are awesome speakers for everything except hip-hop/rap.

I am looking for a set of floorstanders that will sound good with jazz/acoustic music but be able to handle tons of bass and SPL whenever I am having a party at my home.

My budget is @2,000 for the pair.
I don't mind old speakers, or ugly ones, as long as they sound good.

Thank you in advance!

Henry

Klipsch's are recommended often for people who want a lot of volume because of their efficiency, but the trouble is that they sound kind of harsh. Also, your looking for extension and really with rap I can't think of any floorstander that can do it by itself... you need a subwoofer.

Does it have to be a floorstanding only system? Or would you be up for doing two pairs of speakers and a subwoofer?

I'd recommend Bag End M8s for the mains, powered off your Rotel, and then a Bag End INFRA-15 or 18 depending on the room. That would leave you a bit over your budget, but not too bad.

Welcome to the forum, Henry!

I see that Sensi has already mentioned what I was thinking - have you considered getting a subwoofer to augment your current speakers? That'll get you the deep bass while still keeping those speakers that you really like. $2000 is plenty to get you a fantastic subwoofer.

Just get dual subs. with your 2000. That will get you enough bass to get the police to visit.

You can actually build a couple of Kappa Perfects. Those are car subs so they would be great in the right box(which is in the DIY section as a sticky)

They have a crazy response.

Wow

Thanks for all of the input!
I am a newbie and frankly, I'm overwhelmed with the response.
Thanks again.
That being said, I did inherit a pair of Dahlquist DQ-1W 'low bass modules' with the 13" drivers. I hear they are supposed to go all the way down to 20hz!?!
I guess my question is: How do I drive and integrate these beasts into my system? I do not have the LF-1 crossovers that are meant for these, and I don't have an extra amp, but, even if I did, it would have to be a subwoofer amp right? since it needs to have its own crossover?
Any suggestions?

Thanks Again!

Get a pair of Def Tech towers with the built in subs... they put out plenty of bass, and they have high sensitivity so they can play very loud with moderate power.

I hate rap and hip-hop with a passion, so the only speakers I feel are worthy to play that music on is either Bose or white van speakers. But if you insist on playing music that glorifies thug life, spousal abuse and "jackin fools up" I also would give thumbs up to the DefTech powered towers.

Wow i listen to hundreds of rappers and none of them are thugs or gangsters. they dont even rap about that and if they do its just to make fun of it. No spousal abuse, but songs about treating the girls right with respect. i also have no idea of what jackin foools up means. i would suggest you stop being so ignorant and stop judging the culture based on what you see in mainstream media because thats not a full view of what hip hop is. i dont speak on genres i dont like because of the crap i see on tv and radio.

GZA, I work in a hospital in a crappy part of Phoenix, that has a huge gang problem and when I see shooting victims and stabbing victims daily who base their whole persona on the thuglife and how much they discuss rap and hip-hop I tend to be biased. Don't get me started on all the dometsic violence cases I see either. When they come in wearing a blood covered Tupac shirt, I tend to judge. Maybe because I never see some "gangster" come in wearing a blood covered "Mel Torme, or Wang Chung" T-shirt. I have listened to rap and hip-hop to try and understand what the fascination is, but when I hear them declaring, "smackin my *****es and Ho's" and singing bout "pulling my gat or 9" I tend to think that maybe rap isnt the best thing for our younger generation to listen to. But I tell you what, when you have to restrain a bereaved parent whose young son was just shot, then maybe I can listen to your argument that rap isnt a cause of violence. Now I didnt say all violence, but yes it is a contibuting factor.

Heavy metal and rock contribute to teen suicide.

Country music contributes to racism.

If I blindly and ignorantly believed everything I see on TV or hear on the radio, I'd believe these two statements...

And I live in Newark NJ, I have a feeling I know a thing or two about this subject...

Nemo your point is well taken, but the problem with the younger generation, is they emulate what they see and who their heroes are. Inner city kids have enough obstacles in their way, but when their musical escape is a genre of music that yes glorifies, the thuglife, this helps to contribute to an already emotional and unstable youth. I am not saying that all rap is bad and not all hip-hop is bad, but when the biggest rap stars are Tupac and Biggie Smalls (both shot and killed) I tend to think that anything that hinders a childs development of becoming a peaceful, moral driven citizen is not a good thing. You also ave to remember what I post is my opinion only and I realzie many disagree with me, but that's the great thing about America, is that we can voice our opinions. People can love rap and more power to them, I hate it and that is mine. Calling anyone stupid or ignorant for voicing their opinion based on experience is uncalled for.

Oh and just in case any of you were wondering what I do in a hopsital. I spent the last 19 years as a Pathology tech and have assisted in more surgical autopsies than I care to count and I have seen too many of our youth laying on the table. I have seen the atrocities that humans do to each other and have done many rotations in our ER department because of staffing issues. I am now working as a tech in a Cathlab department, which also sees it's full share of shooting victims that have to have emergency heart procedures becasue of shootings and stabbings. Based on the young victims and patients I see, one of the common denominators is "rap icon" t-shirts and discussions on why the love the music so much. I feel I have the experience to comment on my original post, and if you noticed I also gave a good recommendation on some worthy speakers to listen to rap too also, so my post was not without all merit.

Sorry, you'll have to point out where I did what you mentioned. If you blindly and ignorantly believe what you see on TV or hear on the radio, maybe I hit a sore spot. If you don't count yourself among people like that, I don't see how anything was uncalled for.

I feel I have the experience to comment on my original post, and if you noticed I also gave a good recommendation on some worthy speakers to listen to rap too also, so my post was not without all merit.
No one said it wasn't without merit. Correction, I didn't. I don't presume to speak for everyone.

Sorry Nemo, I was talking about the poster who claimed my post was the most ignorant post of the year. Sorry for the confusion. I never resort to calling members ignorant or stupid based on what they say. I feel on a public forum we all learn from everyones point of view.

Matt, what you previously said I completely understand and take very seriously. You are a firsthand witness to the horrors that happen with today's youth, I'd never take that away from you or downplay it.

Thanks Nemo, that's why I understand what you were getting at in your post about Heavy Metal. I understand that a few suicides based on heavy metal doesnt mean we have a worldwide epidemic. But based on my experience rap and hip-hop do help to contribute to why our youth does and says some of the things it does and hence my comment on my original post. I actually do like some older rap like Grandmaster Flash and shaggy, but when it gets into the hurting people for profit or fun, that's when I get testy, but thanks for understanding.

your only seeing one side of hip hop though, not the positive side. hip hop didnt cause these problems. the fact that these people have social problems has been around for a lot longer then gangster rap. gangster and thug rap didnt get started until 1987. those problems you speak of have been around a lot longer.
