Best Sub in $1000-ish Range??

Well, I've been reading and reading and reading posts and I'm still not sure what direction to go. Here's the list of questions that sound like I should share to get good input:

1. My Budget: I'd be thrilled if I could stay in the $700-$900 range, but am willing to go as high as $1200 if I really felt it a worthy investment.

2. Size requirements/limits: The space I have to put this is about 22" W X 23" H X (preferably) 26" D. That's the actual space... I'd rather not fill it up entirely, but again if I feel it's right- I will.

3. Room dimensions: I really don't want to base much of my decision on my current room, given I plan on moving within the next year or so and I intend for this purchase to be an investment. I'd prefer to buy the "best" sub I can find in the budget I currently have with the hopes that it will work well in my next larger space.

Having said that, the current room is only 13 X 7, with an open door to a room that's 11 X 5, opened to another room 11 X 8, opened to a final room 15 X 12. I don't really understand how the additional connected rooms factor, but folks seem to say it makes a difference. The viewing room is small (13 X 7) but as I said- I am purchasing looking ahead to my next living space.

4. Primary uses: Currently: 85% - 90% Movies and 10% - 15% Music. When I move I suspect the amount of music listening will increase, maybe to 70/30 or even 60/40.

5. Listening habits: I mostly listen at moderate/high volume but like the option to crank things when the mood strikes.

6. Appearance requirements: Black in color and smooth looks are my preference, but I am not going to purchase based too highly on this aspect.

7. Timeframe: I'd love to purchase in the next 2-4 weeks. Sooner the better actually.

As I said, I've been doing a fair amount of looking around and from what I've read... ALL the sub owners seem pretty passionate about ~their~ brand... but the SVS owners seem to be (IMO) the most passionate, and I really like all I've read online about the SVS units. The SVS PB12-Plus is at the very high end of my budget, and it maxes out the space I have (but it would fit) although their soon to be released SB12-Plus seems like a good option as well. That one would fit my current space much better, but as it hasn't been released yet (and thus reviewed) I am not sure I want to take the chances on such a brand new / just released unit...

All of my current 9.1 speakers (on my 9.2 Onkyo NR3007 system) are Paradigm, so I was considering their UltraCube 10 or DSP3200.

I also liked what I have read about the Epik Empire. They have a great "sale" going on now that really makes it hit the sweet spot of my budget.

Beyond that... I just feel stuck. And figured it was time to reach out and get some more advice.

Any suggestions on specific brands, models, etc would be helpful... as well as any coaching on how to narrow down the field and my my final choice... also, if you think I may have missed a thread that would help, or links to other forums, etc, etc...

ALL/ANY input will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much!

Get the biggest, baddest sub you can buy for the money. If you're willing to spend 1,200, then you obviously mean business. Check out elemental designs, I'm definitely more than satisfied with them, and for home theater especially, they can shake a room. Their a7s-450 is $850 (18" sealed woofer, 22" cube enclosure), and I think they are even including a free equalizer right now.

One thing that I've learned though, and I'm sure a lot of other people will agree, be flexible with placement.

But, I just think we are always looking for the best, biggest, "just in case" we need to crank it sub. So, go big from the start. I began with a single 12" ported from eD, but ended up going the diy route from them and building their dual 13av.2 kit. I'm more than satisfied, especially when I built a 2,000 dollar sub for 1,100 :)

Good luck though!

I'd seriously take a look at the Empire, it won't disappoint.

I did a lot of reading about the Empire last night, and it is now my forerunner.

I actually think that the SVS might be a ~slightly~ better unit (and for sure the online consensus is that it's a better company) ... but the real question is "is it $400 better"? Which I don't think so (from the research I've done so far).

I still have a little more reading to do and such (and see if any other viable suggestions come my way)... but if I were made to choose in this moment- the Epik Empires would be much choice. It fits my budget perfectly and looks truly like the most bang for the buck from what I've looked at so far.

Thanks for the feedback/input!

I'm still gonna have to champion for the Dayton Titanic MKIII 15". For the cost, I've yet to hear a sub that goes deeper or feels more powerful and "musical".

I have to say, yes- those look good. Here's another "sleeper" sub worth being in the mix of such a decision, these TCA 18.2's.

I also was fond of what I read about the ED A7's-450.

These are ALL great subs, some more well known than others, and we probably can't go wrong choosing any of this bunch for sure.

My paycheck comes on Thu morning and I will make my final choice by then :)

As of now though, the Epik Empires are still top of my list. I really like the SVS's, but not for another $400 (IMO). I'm sure I'll be happy with whichever one I choose, but it looks like I'll shortly be an Epik owner.

We'll see if anything else catches my eye between now and Thu ;)

Craig,

I am finishing my basement and hopefully my media room will be done in about two weeks. I too have been shopping for a sub under $1000. I live east of Brighton and would love to hear your Epik. The Epik is at the top of my list thus far.

smc.chops- sure thing! PM me with your e-mail and I'll let you know when it gets in. I'll order mine by Friday at the latest. No idea how long shipping will take, but I'm happy to have you take a listen. I'm buying this with my next living space in mind, the room it'll be in temporarily is pretty tiny. But I'm sure you'll still be able to get a sense of it (and you'll for sure be able to see the build quality, size, etc).

Happy to help out. My HT project is maybe 6 weeks from DONE... I've been researching and shopping for about 14 months! I'd love to show off the system I put together to someone that would appreciate it :)

Woo Who! I did it. I pulled the trigger and ordered my Epik Empire!!

The shopping/research took a while, but I enjoyed every moment of it and I'm very happy with my choice.

Thanks to all who contributed, there are a lot of great subs out there!!

Congrats Man! I'm hopefully right behind you.
Awesome. I'll let you know soon as it shows up. I'll probably call them tomorrow to see how long it'll take to get here.

NOW... I need to learn how to configure/calibrate it all... I've started doing some research, but to be honest a lot of it goes right over my head. I can't seem to find a simple, step-by-step guide on what to do to get it dialed in correctly. I'm sure if I'm patient, I'll figure it out.

Do you know how to do that? I'd be happy to compensate. I was just on CL looking to see if someone will come and do it for me for free :) This guy looks tempting actually. I think I may give him a call tomorrow as well. This is his website.

I've dumped a bunch of money into this system... and it's running out, but if I can pay someone to calibrate it all for me... I think I'd be thrilled. Then I can just kick back and enjoy :)
