Good day everyone! I was wondering if there are suggestions for the best speakers (either passive or active) that can be bought for $300? I'm planning to use it as a nearfield monitor for my computer. My audio preferences lean towards folk, acoustic, alternative-type music, with a preference for male voices and guitar music. Hope I could hear from a variety of people! Thanks!

Another potential option would be the Arx A1b. Very detailed and precise.

If you have a subwoofer look for a used pair of EMP E41-B (B for beryllium $$$). I haven't heard the newer aluminum cone E41 version so I hesitate to recommend them. The old beryllium mid-woofer was sweet but they die below 100hz and need a subwoofer to handle the bass. These do best as a desktop speaker or in a tiny room. The 4" woofer just can't be driven hard enough to fill a large room.

I have a pair of Paradigmn Titans that I just love. I've used them with ss and tubes and sound great with both. Find them used on audiogon, here or craigs list. Ebay too. If these are a little too big, then PSB Alphas are a nice choice. I bought a pair for my brother in law and we both love them. Nice bass for little guys and clear, open mids and highs sing "value"! Check same sources new or used as rec'd for Titans.
Mike.
