Best spacers for AV equipment if I can't use shelves?

I got an AV rack from West Elm that I like the look of very much. Unfortunately in their infinite wisdom they made the shelves about 15 inches wide even though the outside dimension is nearly 40 inches. Not very helpful when nearly all AV equipment is 17 inches wide. If I leave out vertical boards that hold the shelves I can get each half to 17.5 inches, and none of my equipment is directly side vented, so...

What do you recommend to space equipment to allow heat to escape? I've got 4 PC fans that I am going to put in, and I left the back off the unit, so there should be plenty of cooling if I can seperate the components by a couple of inches.

I'm thinking of something that is about the size of two hockey pucks stacked on top of each other, one for each corner of the device. I tried some web searches but did not come up with anything, does anyone make something like this or should I buy 8 of the cheapest hockey pucks I can find and some super glue?

Thanks,
--Matt
