i want to watch hi def tv , aka cable and broadcast tv, and hear the sound through my reciver, now my tv doesnt have a hdmi out, so i cant hook it up to my reciver with hdmi, it has optical out, and component out, (red yllow, white) which would be better to use, again this will be just for tv channels and cable channels.

btw im using the onkyo tx-sr606 and im using hdmi for blueray/music, but want to hear the tv through the reciver too for cable/broadcast tv.

thanks in advance for al your help, you are a great bunch of guys!

Optical or digital coax for the audio (both will be the same quality.)

to add to that, run the analog "red/white" in addition, in case you ever use the avr for 2nd zone audio(as the avr cant process digital in 2 zones)

the questions isn't whether your tv has hdmi out it is whether your cable box/satellite box has an hdmi out. If that is the case then run the hdmi cable from your cable box to the receiver and then from the receiver to the tv. Or if you mean basic broadcast tv and you don't have a cable box then what the people above said, i.e. the digital (optical or coaxial) audio signals will be better.

Also "component" is a term used for analogue hd video signals, and has a red blue and green terminals. Your described a standard analogue RCA audio + composite video (red+white are the left/right analogue audio signals, and the yellow is the "composite" video signal).

Anyway, you are always better running your audio/video signals through the receiver to the tv then running the audio signal through the tv to the receiver.
