I don't know if I should be using direct, dolby digital, dts, surround....this is very new and confusing to me. All i know is that I get full sound using stereo and it sounds cool but when I use direct surround, i barely get anything coming out of the surround sound speakers.

any advice is greatly appreciated.

Without knowing anything about your equipment it's hard to say. In general, keeping your receiver's surround mode set to Dolby Pro Logic II (for a 5.1 channel setup), or Pro Logic IIx (for a 7.1 setup) will yield good results. Some content playing on your Apple TV may be 2.0 ch., and other content may be 5.1. Regardless, Pro Logic II will upmix/overlay to always give you surround sound no matter what you're watching or listening to.
