Hi Audioholics,

I going to travel from Vancouver to Los Angeles and will be buying one of the following receivers: Yamaha V2500, Denon 3805, HK 7300 or Marantz 8400.

Could you recommend stores (in Washington, Oregon or California) where I could get a killer deal for something like that?
(Canadian prices are just horrible)

Thanks :)

.....Mudakas, welcome to Audioholics.com, and please give us more to work with....give us some room details your system will be set up in, like the size of the room, and damping conditions....(carpet, wood floors, paneling, sheetrock, vaulted ceilings, large openings to other rooms, etc.)....also, have you made any decisions as to your speakers regiment?......

These guys are located in Washington and are top notch. Call ahead to see if they carry what you are looking for in the showroom.

I just bought a Denon 3805 for $799 at Good Guys. I assume they are getting ready for the 3806. You'll find Good Guys stores in pretty much any California city that has the usual big box chain stores. Also, check the sales tax rates - Oregon may have no sales tax, but I could be wrong.

Gino is correct.
No sales tax in Oregon and Nevada.

I got my Denon from a Magnolia Hifi that was inside of Best Buy. I know Fry's carries HK but I'm not sure which models.

Fry’s has been sued more times than a street mutt has fleas. Try a Google search for ‘frys electronics’ … once you get past the first couple of hits for Fry’s own webpages, you’ll find website after website of Frys horror stories. Fwiw, even Fry’s own employees started their own web pages to detail how bad it is at the Frys chain stores.

Best way to buy in California (8.75% sales tax – not refundable!) is to buy online, out of state, and have the item shipped to wherever you will be staying in LA.

L-Jay – Magnolia Hi-Fi, now Magnolia Audio-Video, is owned by Best Buy. Plans are underway to put a Magnolia store inside every Best Buy store. Those satellite Magnolia stores will be supported by primary Magnolias centrally located in a metropolitan area, but separate from a Best Buy store. I think it is a marketing mistake. Placing Magnolia Audio Video inside of Best Buy will dilute the aura of ‘elite’ that Magnolia developed.

Boy howdy! :) I avoid that place like the plague, they have no concept of the term "customer service." A friend once worked there briefly & I couldn't believe the stories he had. I have plenty of my own as a (former) customer...

If you know exactly what you want, Fry's is a great place to shop. You can get that HK AVR-7300 for under $1000 and they're an authorized dealer. Yes, their customer service is poor and staff doesn't know much, but you don't really have to deal with any of that if you're looking for one specific item.

They have incredible closeout pricing on certian items. I bought my HK receiver from them for dirt cheap 3 years ago and it's been perfect.

fryes is awesome, i wish i had one where i live.

customer service and care make no difference to me, id rather save that money i would normally be spending on customer care and just learn about it all myself.

fryes is huge, and has extremely cheap prices a lot of times. As long as you can return a defective item, then it seems harmless to me.

Wow -1000$ for HK-7300 is pretty impressive. In my situation customer service is the least I expect or need. I know what I want and not limited to only one model.

Here is what I found in Portland area:

Captain Video Inc.
The Good Guys
FRY’s Wilsonville, OR
Newport Electronics
Oldfield's
Chelsea Audio
CIRCUIT CITY
Magnolia Hi Fi
Hear No Evil, Inc.
Kelly's Home Center
Stereotypes Audio
Pearl Audio Video
Audio Video Environments

In my area (Sacramento) Fry's took over the defunct "Incredible Universe" store. It's always reminded me of "Barterworld" in the Road Warrior movies...I fully expected to see Tina Turner making deals in the darkened corners. Terrible store to visit unless, as previously stated, you already know what you want and are just price shopping.

Don't say we didn't warn you.
Extended warranties at Frys will cost you ~20% of your purchase price, and many of those "great sales" probably consist of refurbished items.
"FOR GOD'S SAKE MAN- DON'T DO IT !"
Buy all the software and DVD's you want there, but buy your audio components someplace else !

Fwiw, Fry’s got nailed for repackaging returned items, used items, repaired items, etc… and selling them as brand new. There have been class-action lawsuits they had to deal with, too.

NEVER buy anything from Fry’s that is not in the original, sealed, manf’s pkging. Open and check the contents of EVERYTHING before you leave the store. As far as pricing goes, I’ve always found the items somewhere else for less.

All-in-all, Fry’s isn’t worth it for me.
