best of both the worlds

Hey folks,

I am on the forum after quite a time.

Can one suggest amplifier (pref. Yamaha, Denon, Marantz) which can be good for the movies as well as the music. Yeah want to have best of both the worlds.
Should not cost more than $600.

AND

also floor standers(only front) or book-shelves(only front) which can be again good for movies and music at the same time. Somewhere I head that if the speakers have a good mid-range then we get a loud bang out of it, which I presume is good for action movies.(Looking for Jamo, Wharfdales, Monitor audio pref in the range of $600)

As far as recievers, any of the brands you mentioned should work fine. Choose one that has the features that you need/want in your price range.

Choosing speakers is very subjective. Read through some of the other threads in this section. Audition as many as you can to get a feel for the type of sound you like. Bring samples of your favorite music and movies. If a speaker sounds good to you for music, it should be just as good for movies. If you find something you like that is a little out of your price range, try the used market. You can often find speakers in excellent condition. It's tough to recommend speakers without knowing your room size and layout. Are you going planning on only two speakers or will you be using 5 for surround sound? You will most likely want to get a subwoofer for movies, and for music also if you choose bookshelf speakers. The brands you listed are a good place to start. I'm sure other members will chime in with specific brands/models in your price range if you give us some more info.

Pick your speakers first, then the receiver. Denon has just upgraded its receivers, so you may still find a good deal on last years models. I think that Onkyo is also releasing some new models right now (we're usually a little behind in Canada).

How big is your room? Do you have a sub or are you thinking of getting one?

You should be able to find a nice set of bookshelves in that price range. I would go with bookshelves if you have or are planning to get a sub.

Pesonally, I would start out by going to some local audio stores and listening to speakers in your price range using music/movies you are familiar with.
