Hello everyone,

Newbie here, and I'm shopping for a receiver that will best compliment the above LCD. We will have HD channels from Direct TV, and have a regular DVD player, but, will eventually be upgrading to HD-DVD or Blu-Ray. I'm looking for the best receiver at under $1000.00. I was originally going to default to a Sony receiver, however, I am having doubts after reading these forums. The speakers I will be running have the following specs:
Speaker Type: In-ceiling, 2 way
Woofer: 8” injected polypropylene
Tweeter: 1” silk soft dome, swivel
Power: 5 - 120 watts
Impedance: 8 ohms
Frequency Response: 45 - 20k Hz
Sensitivity: 89 dB (2.83 volts @1 meter)
EQ Adjustments: Tweeter & woofer 0, -3, -6

I really appreciate any advice anyone can provide.

Cheers,

RB

video and audio are totally independent of each other.

You're free to choose any receiver you like and it will assuredly mate as well with your TV as any other receiver.

I'm of the opinion that ceiling speakers, particularly for the fronts, are not best the way to go. Directionality, localization and all that stuff. You're better off mounting them in the wall alongside and under the TV.

And, always look at speaker specs with a jaundiced eye, particularly where bass is concerned.

Visually speaking, a silver color one should be a good match. Yamaha RX-V series, Denon, and Pioneer all have this color option. For <1K, the most powerful unit available at the moment seems to be the Onkyo TX-SR805 (weighs 50 lbs unless it was a typo in their publish specs). I think they are black only though.

Thanks for the words.

The ceilings that will house the speakers are vaulted, so the angle will almost be directionally normal to the listener. Plus, the tweeters can be rotated to point towards the listener. The Sony LCD will have black trim, so the receiver will also be black. I have narrowed my search between the Sony STR-DA3300ES, the Onkyo TX-SR605, and Onkyo TX-SR705. Any and all experience with these would be greatly appreciated. I've read some reviews that mentioned the difficulty of set up for the Onkyo ... anyone else have experience with that??

Thanks again everyone.

Speaker specs can be misleading, which speakers specifically will you be using? Also, how big/dimensions is your room and how loud do you listen?

Of all the major brands, Onkyo receivers are the easiest to setup and use.

Thanks again.

The speakers I will be using are Truaudio R1-8 with the specs above, and a 12" sub from the same company. As far as how loud I will be playing music and videos, I'm not sure. I'm hoping for real strong sound that is well balanced, so I do not have to turn up the volume very much. The room is 13'-6" x 19'-0". Right now, my decision looks to be between the two Onkyo models, mentioned above.

Thanks again for any advice.
