Hello all,

I'm relatively a newbie in the arena of home entertainment center. I'm building a house right now and would like to set up a surrond system in my family room. I want to put in inwall speakers to keep a nice clean look. Would you guys give me your pick of the best inwall out there. I'm looking to spend no more than $2000.00 for all five speakers plus a sub. I have been looking Martin Logan and so forth.

Thanks

I am in the same boat and have found that Triad manufactuers some inwalls that get high praise. I have yet to get to a dealer and give them a listen. Specifically, I am looking at the silver model.

Are these to go with the plasma over the fireplace? Will the center go above or below the plasma? What are the room dimensions for sub recommendation? What is the viewing distance from the plasma? Will this be a 5/7.1 system? Are in-ceilings an option?

AVRat,

The plasma will be above the fireplace. The center speaker will be on top of the plasma. The room is about 250(approx 193 in x 180 in) sq ft. Viewing distant would be about 10 ft or so. I would like to have inwall speakers for the front three and in ceiling speakers for the back two for my 5.1 system. The sub will sit on the floor in the front. What would you recommend?

thx

Triad does make some of the finest in-wall speakers, but they are also some of the more expensive choices. I believe for the most part, their dealers are custom installers. M&K also makes some very fine in-walls.

(NOTE: neither of these companies will fit in a $2K budget :( )

Here I go again recommending Polk in-wall/ceiling speakers. They offer great bang/buck performance and versatility for difficult situations. Since you’re mounting speakers higher than normal, you need speakers with some amiability. Not too many speakers have this option. I suggest the Polk TC265is up front. Though using one for the center may be problematic if the fireplace framing is at the normal 16” center. If it is, then you should consider the TC65i oriented horizontally. I would go with the TC60is for the surrounds. http://www.jr.com/JRSectionView.process?N=10172+401653&Ne=400000#Brand

My 1st choice for a sub would be the SVS PB12-NSD or PB10-NSD, then an HSU STF-3.

I also suggest the Speakercraft AIM LCR One/AIM5 Three combo. These are probably more appropriate for your situation and the LCR will fit between the framing.

All,

I just had a meeting with the builder tonight. They are going to charge me $1000 to just do the pre-wiring for the surround system. Cmon, it is ridiculous. Do you all think I should do it? How hard/costly it is to run the wires after the home is built?

thanks all

If one is not experienced in doing "retro" (walls finished) installs it could be quite difficult.

As for inwalls, RBH has some great speakers. They have them from value to high end. www.rbhsound.com

No matter what it will be cheaper to do it ahead of time. That does seem very high for the pre-wiring, although the cost of copper is going through the roof. This week in a nearby town someone stole $70,000 worth of copper from a company.

I have a friend who just built a house. He went over in the evenings after the workers left and ran his own wiring. As long as the master electrician sign off on it, I don't know that it matters who runs it. Not advocating taking the wire into your own hands, just stating what a friend did.

About speakers, Triad does make some great inwalls. Monitor Audio makes some that are a little more affordable than the Triads. The benefit of the Triads is they are supposed to sound like their box speakers.

If you like the Martin Logans, you may want to try the BG PD-6 speakers. I believe they make the drivers for Martin Logan speakers. The only problem may come in where you are mounting them. If the display is going over a fireplace, and the speaker on top of the display, that is a lot of height difference. Planar drivers are known for having limited vertical dispersion.

There is someone who posts on here who deals with BG speakers. He may be able to give some insight into whether a planar speaker would work in this situation. He posts under InTheIndustry.

Enjoy

$1000 to only wire for speakers is a little much.

To give you an idea of what I think is reasonable for new construction.... We just charged $1400 for wiring a dedicated media room.

The room was wired for:
- IR repeater system to the equipment closet.
- Two (2) 7 Meter SonicWave DVI cables from Impact Acoustics. Both from the equipment closet. One to the in-room DVD and the other to the projector.
- Two (2) 25 foot blue Impact Acoustic RapidRuns with the HDMI
- Power to the projector
- 8 speakers (two in ceiling rear, three through the stage that we built in front of the screen, and three above the stage for in ceiling L/C/R's incase the home owner didn't want the look of tower speakers)
- Subwoofer cable

I will admit that the customer got a bit of a deal because we also wired the house for 16 zones of audio with digital key pads, built a custom enclosure for the projector, built custom cabinetry, and wired for two plasma TV's and a 6a" DLP. All of which is being purchased from us which was obviously a factor in pricing the prewire. However, for just 5 speakers and a sub, $1K is too much as long as the cable runs aren’t ridiculously long. $850 would be a good price if that includes good materials and 12/2 wire. I will post pics soon.

It might be worth saving a couple of $'s to see what speakers your installer carries and maybe if you go with those you can get a "total system" deal. Also, you usually don't have to use the company the builder suggests (although they won't tell you that unless you ask). Shop around and see if anyone else can come in and do it.

As far as speakers go. A month ago I picked up the Triad line and love them for high end applications. They are an amazing and unique company/product. But on a $2K budget, there is no way a complete surround system can be done with that brand.

BG's are excellent excelent speakers. What I really like about them above and beyond the sound quality is that they are very forgiving to room environments, plus they carry a lifetime warranty. Another big bonus is that they aren't thirsty for power. A receiver in the $800 - $1K range would be perfect. You could do five speakers from BG add a sub from another company and come in around $2K going strictly by MSRP. A smart thing to consider is that you are placing a center channel (in wall I am assuming) above the plasma. BG's provide a great throw from the driver on both the horizontal and vertical plains which would help in that case. I will list a system (along with a budget sub that I like) to consider along with MSRP pricing below.

2 Pair of PD-6 Planar in walls - $600 per pair http://www.bgcorp.com/productDetail.php?id=34
1 PD-LCR Planar In wall - $500 http://www.bgcorp.com/productDetail.php?id=33
Jamo Sub 6510 - $600 http://jamo.com/Default.aspx?ID=5945&M=Shop&PID=16412&ProductID=16627

Note: The center channel I listed is meant for in-wall installations. If the center is going on a shelf and NOT in-wall a BG Z-5 Center Channel priced at $400 would be the substitute speaker. http://www.bgcorp.com/productDetail.php?id=2&image=1

NOTE Part 2: You will need to call BG to get the proper measurements for building back boxes for these. It’s easy and relatively inexpensive to do. I highly recommend back boxing any open back in wall or in ceiling speaker.

NOTE Part 3: BG is making minor changes to the PD line. One of the changes is that the mid driver is going to be black in color and not yellow.

Total MSRP: $2,300
You should be able to get this system for around $2K or under.

If your ceiling is not Vaulted (flat) or around 8 - 10ft I would recommend going with something from Jamo or Truaudio brands. You could use in walls for the Front L/R and Rear L/R and for the center use one of their in ceiling LCR speakers. Those are both good quality brands that I have used quite a bit and have no problem recommending at all.

If you had pictures of the room and where the TV was going, I could give better advice. Sorry to offer up so many options.

I am a PSB dealer as well and have read great things about these speakers. I hope to hear these models at a trade show tomorrow. However, I am not a big fan of "plasma friendly" speakers. They are fine for retro fit installs but, for new construction, I rarely find a need for them. Just my $0.02

The point about the vertical dispersion is correct. However, on the center channel I believe the tweeter can be rotated. If memory serves me well, the BG center comes with the tweeter turned on its vertical axis to be used as a center. There is a PDF that can be viewed on the BG site that details the install process. You could also build the speaker into the wall with a slight tilt towards the listening area.
