Best inexpensive bedroom system?

For the past several years, my wife and I have used a small Sony tuner/CD player system in the bedroom. It's worked well but the CD no longer works and it's time to upgrade.

I don't have room for a typical receiver and CD player since this sits on top of a chest of drawers. I want something that's higher quality than a boom box and it must have detachable speakers (because I'll likely use a pair of Axiom bookshelves) but it must be small. For reference, my current Sony is about 8" wide, 6" tall and 8" deep.

Ideally, it would also have a sub output and inputs for things like a DVD player, should I decide to upgrade to that.

Anyone have experience with a small system like this that costs less than say $500 (not including speakers)? Thanks for your input!!!

...the Onkyo MC35TECH...<$400 w/speakers...three disc changer, AM/FM tuner w/ 30 presets, inputs for other sources, remote, clock...I am of the opinion this system with a Polk 50watt sub will rival living room systems costing much more...although for a bdrm system the sub isn't required...here's a link:

They have also introduced model CS-V720S for around $400, but I'm not familiar with it...it, however, may be easier to find this unit as it is a newer CD/DVD model and it seems to have great flexibility and connectivity...may be just what you're looking for...very small footprint...another link:

TEAC and Denon also have mini-components, but they are appreciably more expensive and difficult to find in the real world.

Hmm. . . this Pionner combo is larger unfortunately, else it would be nice:

...shy away from articles built and packaged specifically for the "big box" stores and on-line retailers...Educated guess: that's what this unit is...It's simply a price-point thing...do you think you're getting top-of-the-line merchandise from name-brand stores at the outlet malls? Hey buddy, nice label! It's mostly substandard merch to which a high MSRP has been assigned...Ever wonder what "compare at" means...
