Depends on if you want new or B stock. Personally, you can get a killer unit B stock in that price range if you shop.
The best deal I can find right now is the Onkyo 803 for $599.

Ecost had a Denon 3805 for $562, but it's not listed today. Ubid had the Yamaha 2500 for $460 last week, but again, it's not listed today.
Those above units are a step up from the Pioneer Elite 52 and 1015. If you can find an Elite 56TXi on ebay for $650, I'd jump on it.
I really, really like the new Marantz models but they are a bit pricier. The 7500 is a hundred or more above your price range.
