I have had top, front and down firing subs. Down low, it makes little difference.

Right at $500 would be the Epik Legend. Under would be the Emotiva Ultra 12 and probably the Cadence CSX-12 MkII.

If you can add $49'to the budget i HIGHLY recommend the newly released HSU VTF2-MK4 at $549 its an INCREDIBLE sub.

I would take the HSU over the Epik anyday!!

The new vtf2-mk4 can be run sealed OR ported which is really cool. Their subs are so much more musical than Epik's. Id probably even take a HSU 10" over the Legend. Thats my personal oppinion! Not trying to slam Epik but just being honest. :)

I'd skip Cadence CSX-12 MkII as it measured 34hz at -3db - not enough extension, but still plenty of output. Same applies to Epic Legend - it's excellent sub for music with plenty of output, but it's straggling with lower than 30hz sounds...

My #1 choice for $500 would be Rythmic FV12 - currently on sale for $499+shipping
Also good options:
Outlaw Audio LFM-1 Plus Powered Subwoofer (made by HSU)
Elemental Designs: Car Stereo, Home Speakers, Electronics

What you want for HT is lowest extension, which is pretty hard to archive in sealed sub configuration (ie - not possible in this price range)
Firing (or venting) location doesn't matter, except if you have people living below you - you'd want to avoid these.

Of the HSUs I've heard and owned, I actually wouldn't say they are more musical. Haven't heard the Mk4s though. Definitely excellent subs.

Not sure where those numbers are from, but in my room, with no boost, it was easily down to 25Hz (I ran tones). Below that, not much going on though.

Cadence's amp has a boost knob on it is what I mean, for those who like artificial oomph. I had it somewhat corner loaded, but no boost dialed in on the amp, so yes there was room gain. I am sure most people will not use it outdoors :)

A vented sub gets a extra efficiency at the bottom of its pass band. In smaller, closed rooms, the natural rolloff of GOOD sealed subs can work better because the pressure vessel gain seems to match the rolloff of the sub. In larger/more open rooms, the room gain tends to mate well with lower tuned vented subs, so the added efficiency is a big plus. However below the tuning point, it rolls off much faster than a sealed sub.

I recommend never getting a sealed sub smaller than the surface area of 15" driver with long throw. Else it'll be too punchy and distorted for accurate reproduction, as it'll too quickly hit its limits on deep bass. Most sealed subs have circuitry that cuts off the low end at high SPLs, and you don't want that.

I also recommend never getting a vented sub smaller than a 12" with a reasonably large box, for the same reason. Also, if a vented box is tuned too "flat", the room will add a lot of extra deep bass. For music this can mean a perception of "slowness" because, after all, a 30hz tone is slow compared to its harmonics IE 90hz. So you need to equalize appropriately.

All the above said, in your budget I recommend the Rythmik FV12:

Iagree the Rythmik FV12 is a great sub at that price! So is the Outlaw. Along with HSU those would be my choices!

Thanks for all the opinions and help.. I do have tenants living below me so maybe i should avoid a down firing (i also plan on getting an isolation platform). I think the cadence would be a bit too big for my space... I was leaning towards the HSU, but maybe i should avoid it cause it's down firing... This is the hardest theatre decision yet :)

In this case, as I mentioned before I'd avoid the down firing...
As me and others mentioned: Rythmik FV12 is your best and easiest choice...

Think the ones that would fit my needs (size, front firing and ported) that you guys have suggested are the Rythmic FV12, the ED A3.... I've read alot of good things about the HSU vtf-1 and that was my top runner but if you guys think that downfiring will make a difference to my tenants ill avoid it.

I really do appreciate the time and help thank you again!

If you get an isolator pad I'm not sure down firing is going to be a problem. Decoupling it from the floor will go a long way towards minimizing what your neighbors hear and feel.

Yes, but the FV12 is going to be a better sub than the VTF-1 IMO.

I haven't heard either unfortunately, so I'm not really in the position to comment about the subs directly. I was just trying to give me some information about isolators in general. From all I've read about the Rythmik it does sound like quite a subwoofer.

I haven't heard the FV12 either, only an F12 and VTF-2 and 3. Just based on specs alone though, the VTF-1 says -3dB is 25Hz (32Hz in max output) and 200w amp, while the FV12 says 20Hz and 300w amp. I like HSU subs a lot, but between these two, I'd go Rythmik.
