Best DIY Sub for 2.1?

OK, in case you haven't read my Under Couch Subwoofer thread, I have a design that Annunaki came up with for me, but I'm wondering what the best approach for a 2.1 (music only) system would be.

Here are the three options I'm considering:
1) Undercouch ported subwoofer (as in the subject thread), using a JL 10W1V2, BASH 300 and a DCX2496.

The position under the couch would be about 5 or 6 feet from the centre of the sub woofer to the mains, along a sidewall.

2) 2 conventional ported (or sealed) subwoofers, using the same components as above. I'd like to keep them small - about 22"H x 12"W x 12"D. I like the vertical orientation for the small footprint and have the drivers up-firing to keep the height down. Don't know if I'd need to go with a BASH 500 for 2 subs....?

The subs would have to be placed along the side walls, about 18" forward of the mains.

3) A single conventional ported (or sealed) sub utilizing a JL 8W7 driver, BASH 300 and DCX2496. It would have to be a single, due to the cost of the driver.

It would be placed along one of the sidewalls, about 18" from the mains.

Using the DCX, I wonder if it is all that important for integration to keep the sub(s) as close to the mains as possible in a 2.1 system? I'm well aware that W7 drivers are superior to W1V2 drivers, but for the application - music played at moderate levels, is there any jusification? Will a single 8W7 in a small enclosure be superior to 2 x 10W1V2s in small enclosures, or 1 x 10W1V2 in a larger enclosure. Remember - it's for music only.

Thanks for any input.
