I would like to know what the best quality I can find for an all around awesome CD/SACD, for the $500 price range.

Thanks, Josh

Pick up an Oppo and save some bucks that can be used for something more important.

Why the $500 price point? Is it just for CD/SACD or are you looking to play DVD/BD as well?

I would agree that the Oppo would be an ideal choice, but if you want BD capability I would look into the PS3 as well as it can handle both SACD and BD.

Well I can get the Pioneer Elite for less than the new Oppo, but I'm guessing that the Oppo will win hands down in the performance aspect. So for sound quality in your oppinion is the Oppo is the best out there for the $500 mark?

Its only for CD/SACD, I have a PS3 but its the 40Gig which Im pretty sure does not decode SACD, I could be wrong though I will have to look into that

I would buy the oppo 983h as it is 399 and is one of the top rated players out there today. As far as 500 goes that leaves you 100 to put towards something else.:D

Well, if you send a digital CD signal to the receiver/processor, it will not make a difference.
SACD may, or not, be audibly different. Most likely not. But, if you need a good DVD player to up-convert your DVD, then perhaps the Oppo is it.

I think what I want is just a dedicated CD player, I have a Toshiba HD-A2 and a PS3, I just thought I would get better sound with something else that was made for playing CD's exclusively

umm, no.

the downside to universal players versus dedicated CD players is the boot time, and being able to program the songs to play without using an OSD.

but SQ wise, i doubt you will be able to hear the difference.

You don't need a stand alone CD player; you already have two on hand:D
Send the digital out to the receiver and save that $500 for a rainy day:D

AS a DVD player which is better PS3 or yamaha dvd-s657? I want to have it as backup for PS3 not being region free. I have 40GB PAL PS3 I am not able to even play region 3 dvd's Many Disney/PIXAR movies are only on region 3. I dont want to hack these to make them region free.
I have a cheap sony DVP-NS78H which has very poor audio CD performance, no SACD.
I have found that the PS3 video and audio performance to be better than the sony DVP-NS78H. How does it compare to the Yamaha?

TIA
regards

Unfortunately I know nothing about that Yamaha, but a code free DVD player for $140 (at least according to this site http://regioncodefreedvd.com/yamaha657.html) cannot be a bad deal.
