Hi. I have an HD tv and have just purchased the Panasonic DMP-BD35. I was wondering what the best value AVR or surround sound system would be that would let me use the Dolby TrueHD or the DTSTM-HD from the bluray player. Thank you.

What's your budget? Do you need any certain features or inputs, etc.?

What speakers you have and the size of your room are also important factors when considering a receiver.

HK254, Onkyo 606, Yamaha 663, and Pioneer 1018. They're all good.

Also consider the Denon AVR-2308ci from 6ave Electronics....They currently have this AVR for sale at $478---a very good deal on a $800 AVR. Also be sure to look at the review of this unit here on Audioholics....it received a very good review. Alot of AVR for your $$$$ here...

Well, purchasing speakers comes before the AVR....what is your budget for speakers. The Denon I told you about above is the best AVR for the price....IMHO....but it's important to put the most of your resources into speakers. So give us some info as to room size and listening habits---and we can point you in the right direction...

Are your sure? 25'x30' is huge by nearly every standard for home theatre. That is probably 7,500 cubic feet if you have 10' ceilings. If your room is really that large then you need to look for a very powerful system.

Not necessarily the case Sptrout. As always, it comes down to the users listening habits and expectations for their system. Now if the OP expects to reach theater reference levels with headroom to spare in this room, then a beefy amp would be a must. But if he listens at normal to moderate levels---then an AVR like the Denon 2308ci I suggested would be more than sufficient providing it is connected to efficient speakers like Klipsch (for example) which often run in the 8ohm, 98-100db sensitivity range. Where large rooms are the most difficult are on the subwoofer category….the larger the space you have the more and more important it becomes to have a sub that can fill the space appropriately. But even this has some sway when it comes down to the users needs as well. There are too many variables to pin down any specifics...but given stated price range the 2308ci is hard to beat...

Still waiting to hear back from the OP on the specifics that he requires for listening habits and expectations though…So we can more accurately help out…

Hi Chopin_Guy; good to hear from a local Houston person!

The main reason for my original post was to reconfirm the size of the OP's room. I have been reading HT Boards for years and never seen anyone refer to a 25'x30' room as "not big." That is 1/2 as big as a small house. I do not remember ever reading a post from anyone about a room that large! My room is between 5500-6000 cubic feet and I have never even seen anyone mention a room that big before.

I agree, that bass is a real joy when it comes to big rooms. I have settled on one subwoofer, but I really could use more......someday...
