Hate to jump on the bandwagon but Avatar and the Oppo BDP-83.

Breathtaking!

Avatar wins for best picture quality hands down. Best audio quality is a toss up between many discs.

Master and Commander for movie audio
Concert audio...tossup...Seal Sounstage, Pat Metheny The Way Up Live, or Dave Mathews/Reynolds...all bluray. KD Lang is plush even if not a fan.

Recently watched Dr. Parnassus...odd indeed...though good story. The scene in middle of movie or there abouts where the ladder breaks in to what is like giant stilts...amazing sweeps/pans...bass swoosh all around.

...via oppo83 analog out.

The non CGI scenes of Avatar are ridiculously beautiful, the CGI is just average.

A lot of people think Baraka looks absolutely stunning on BR. Maybe Avatar eclipses Baraka... IDK as I haven't seen Avatar off of disc yet.

My favorite Blu-ray disks for audio and video are Kung Fu Panda and The Dark Night played on a Panasonic BD55. I have not seen avatar in theatre or on Blu-ray.

Animated movies are usually going to look and sound brilliant just cos of the nature of being animated -- ALL sights and sounds are created from scratch, so they can be made to look and sound perfect. I'm sure this isn't true of ALL animated movies, but a lot of them, I'm sure.

In terms of live-action Blu-ray movies, I've been 100% impressed with 2001: A Space Odyssey, Quantum of Solace, and the first Transformers movie. Visually and aurally, all three of the movies were completely stunning.

cheers,

You're nuts. Avatar has some of the best CG I've seen.

The one scene that always sticks in my mind is the one near the end where Neytiri just crashed her flyer and the soldiers are coming up behind her. When she turns to look back at the soldiers with her back against the tree looks COMPLETELY real.

It amazes me every time I see it.

Though the movie didn't totally impress me, the animation is excellent. It is a visually impressive movie.

Unfortunately, as movies both Transformers and Quantum of Solace were fails for me. I found Transformers 2 more entertaining and less annoying for the most part. QoS was just not up to par. Casino Royale was a better movie and looked and sounded just as good as QoS.

Well, what's a better movie than another is all subjective, but my personal opinion is that Transformers and QoS were great-fun type of movies and not fails at all. Casino Royale, for me, is a better movie than QoS, but I was highly impressed with the PQ and AQ of both Bond flicks, QoS maybe slightly more. But that's subjective too. :)

cheers,

Yeah I was hugely disappointed with QoS....I guess thats what you get when you made a freaking awesome action movie (Casino Royale) and choose a different director for the follow up movie (douchebag)....

Yeah, something along those lines. Casino Royale had the feel of the early Bond movies while QoS had the feel of some of the 80s movies, which sucks because QoS is a direct continuation of CR. That's where it went wrong IMO, is that if they didn't tell you story elements from CR, you wouldn't know the two movies were related. I didn't hate QoS, but I didn't love it.
