I know this gets asked about a million times a day across the internet. My hope here was that some people in similar situations as me would chime in. Here are the parameters for the system I need.

Cost: <$500
Format: 5.1
Powered Sub (plug in wall)
DVD player included or not, not that serious.
Speakers don't have to be big, or small, just effective

The system will be used for simple DVD watching. This is going in the girlfriends apartment. So booming bass and blow you away volume not required. Room will NOT be bigger than 20x20 or so.

The reason it doesn't need to be a serious system is hopefully in the next 9 months to a year (before we move in together) I will finish off my Yamaha/Paradigm system with some Studio 60's, a center, and a sub. Then this system will either be used for the computer or the bedroom.

Thanks guys, sorry for the rehash, but I got crap when I searched.

Try some of the logitech offerings that come with a Digital Decoder.

20x20 is a big room (even though that is the max) and you're going to want to fill it enough to enjoy the movie.

I'm probably going to get flammed for this, but the other HTIB sets SUCK compared to these PC sets. Best part, is it's fully compatible with a PC, DVD player, and CD player, and all of them can be hooked up at the same time.

Thanks Nick. And Sheepstar I will look into the logitech, you are not the first person I have heard mention them for a HTIB setup. That may work out well cause she wants a new computer system too, but I think when she moves they will be in seperate rooms.

I really like the sound of the Klipsch ProMedia speakers and remember being blown away by the previous version. This is their latest offering, Klipsch ProMedia Ultra 5.1. The performance is amazing for the price.

Note of caution, you will have to use the DVD player's 5.1 analog out since the speakers dont have any decoding built into them.

The Hsu Research Ventriloquist (6.1) can be had with a Hsu STF-1 sub woofer for US$498.00 when bought online....

I would go for the STF-2 sub an add another US$100 to the above price...

This is a very decent home theater set up and I run it as my main with a YAMAHA RX-V559 AV receiver....which would set you back ~ US$300.

It plays well above its price level - and a better sub will add a presence to the movie listening experience that you just don't get with a cheapish model....

Just my two cents, but have a listen if you get the chance....

Good luck.....
