i dont know too much about that price range, but i would check out NAD, the stereo reciever from Outlaw audio, and maybe look at some integrated stuff from rotel. I recently bought a hk3480 120 wattx2 reciever for 200$. it has a lot more power than my parents 250$ 50 wattx2 denon reciever. If you are looking to save some money i would suggest the hk. (it retails for 450$)

The outlaw appears to be a great little unit built for exactly what you are looking for, but I believe it is on backorder while they are swithching production facilities.

I am using the HK3480. Sound is very good for the money. With your budget, you can step up to used Rotel or Arcam receiver, which are known for musicality.

From what I've read on the Outlaw receiver, it might be worth the wait.
