I am a big time n00b when it comes to audio, but not much else computer related... I guess that's not audio.

I want to know basically what you need to have in a basic 5.1 channel (or even 5.2, but I'm not THAT big on bass) audio system (no video, hooking it up to computer). I also want to know what is important in terms of quality.

Also, what is the absolute best 5 speaker + sub(s) + everything else that I do not know of combo that you can possibly have (just for the dreamers and the people who have 3 Bentley's, a mansion, etc.) for a medium-sized room?

In terms of sound quality, what is most important are the speakers, not the receiver or amplifier. Unless the speakers are a difficult impedance, or are terribly inefficient, or one listens at volumes loud enough to do permanent damage to one's hearing, in an ordinary room, just about any receiver or amplifier from a reputable company (e.g., Yamaha, Denon, Marantz, Pioneer, etc.) will be adequate. Of course, the sorts of decoders you want will depend upon the source material you will be playing.

And for speakers, although reviews in which actual measurements are taken can be useful (particularly for removing a model from consideration), you should listen to as many different models, from as many different companies, of as many different types (e.g., ribbons, horns, domes, whatever), as you can stand, that are within your price range. The reason is, there is no such thing as a perfect speaker, and so it is a question of which virtues you require and which vices you can tolerate.

In my opinion, if you don't have a lot of money, it would be better to get a good quality 2 channel system than to get a surround system, but some people feel otherwise and obviously their choices reflect their preferences on such matters.

I would second this notion.
Surround sound vs Sound Quality vs Low Cost
Pick two, you likely won't get the other.

A great sound system is probably one where

- Real Life sounds are reproduced such that they don't sound "off"
- Poor Recordings sound Poor and great recordings sound lifelike & high-res
- Room dependancy is minimal. While you will always hear the room, you don't want the room to shape what you hear.
- Turning up the volume sounds clean as if you haven't turned it up at all.
- Seating position doesn't dictate your ability to enjoy the recording.
- Everything sounds coherent from top to bottom.

So for a 5.1 in a medium sized room, I don't know what collection of speakers I would select. I think I would lean the way of DIY speakers which don't follow the norms. I think I would want to possibly try out that coaxial Seas speaker TLS Guy uses in an open baffle 3.5 way dipole as a center channel, a pair of linkwitz orions as left/rights, Some form of horizontal cardiod array or something for the surround channels based around the accuton ceramic midrange, and two-four huge transmission lines using the best TC Sounds, Acoustic Elegance, or Exodus Drivers to handle the first octave and half or so. Maybe. Or five behringer truth 2030Ps.

In a larger room, I would probably lean the way of pro audio drivers with their effortless ability to produce SPL
