Beginner mounting plasma over fireplace

Hi all, need some help. We want to hang our 42" plasma above our fireplace using a tilt wall mount. The problem is this and please forgive me for being a little technically challenged... There are only 3 studs in the wall, one in the center of the fireplace and one to the left and right of that center stud, spaced 24" apart. That being said, w/ those measurements, our wall mount can only hit the center stud. Is it possible for us to hang our plasma over the fireplace and if so, how do we do it? Are we the only ones with this problem? Should I just tell my fiance that we need to mount it on another wall? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

First consideration: What happens when the fireplace smokes inside and gets smoke on the screen?

With that 42" Plasma, I would recommend is using a nice cabinet grade hardwood veneer plywood with edges picture frames in hardwood the hide the edge grains of that plywood, screwed to all 3 studs with a number of screws, maybe 3 in each, perhaps #8 or #10 screws countersunk a bit and button plugging the holes, stained. Then, mounting the tv bracket so the TV is centered.

This board needs to overlap the 3 studs, and have some extra so those screws with the button plugs don't look out of place and, you probably want to have as much overhang above and below the TV as you have to each side. This would be my recommendation on this.

But, how high will that TV be above the floor? You may want to place a cardboard cut out up there and see if you want to loo up from a seating position for hours watching a TV? I don't think I would; not comfortable for me.
