Beginner looking for some information

Hey all, looking to get a new system; haven't read up on this in a while so no idea what to look for. I recently purchased the Yamaha V577 Receiver and am looking for some speakers to match up with. Looking for something in the $300 price range, nothing too expensive. What are some recommendations i should look for? What should i know?

I was looking at the energy take classic 5.1 that seems to be on sale for $299.00. Is this a good set or should i look for other things separate?
Living within an apartment, but want something i can take with me in the future if i purchase. Currently a 15' x 18' room.

The Energys are a decent 5.1 system but if you can swing it, fine a 5.0 system, generally around $199, and go for a bigger sub. A room that size will appreciate it. Now, provide how much you can go for and some suggestions will follow. For instance, for $200, the BIC F12 is a good buy. They get better the more you can spend.

Well, the reason i was considering the Energy 5.1 was due to it being on sale now for $299.00. Is there a better option at that price point?

For a 5.1 system, not really, but that's a lot of room for that sub.

Alright, so if i am willing to spend the extra money for a better system; what should i look at? What $300 or under speaker systems (without sub) are available that are as good or better than the energy?

Unless you're going to forgo a sub you might want to specify a total expenditure for speakers and sub here otherwise we're just mentally masturbating.

What I suggested is a great bang for the buck $400 system.

[edit] They used to sell that system without the sub as the take 5 system for $200 but it seems to be hard to find and, surprisingly, the 5.1 system is cheaper than the 5.0 system. Let's see what else we can find.

I apologize for that, what i meant was that if i purchased the sub you recommended; what speakers should i look at. Total cost would be 500$ for speakers+sub not counting tax etc...

Check out Jamo. They often have deals on their 5.0 systems ranging from bookshelf speakers to satellites (Vanns.com often has deals). For example, I've seen the Jamo 360 satellites sell for under $200 for 5.0. Add to that an HSU STF-2 which is on sale right now and you have a whole lot more subwoofer.

Another option is to go with an better 2.0 or 2.1 setup and add speakers later.

Good stuff, will look into those suggestions. I came upon a few ones as well, wondering what your thoughts were. Bestbuy will be having the klipsch r26's on sale for $170 each for black friday. Currently also newegg has the polk monitor 70's for $300 for the pair. What are a better set of floor standing speakers? Was considering also grabbing the Klipsch r15's bookshelf speakers for half off as well.

As for the subwoofer, been doing some research and asking a bunch of questions; i am currently leaning toward the BIC PL-200, will just wait and grab it once i find a sale.
