Becoming a Speaker Aficionado

I've become a speaker aficionado. It makes me feel like a nut, even more so than obsessing with little Teac components. Why do I feel silly? I feel silly because I have countless speakers sitting around unused. Granted many of them are not used for good reason but I have more than 10 pair of speakers with only 3 pair in regular use. I have 4 subwoofers with just one in use. Luckily I have only one center channel, it's massive so it satisfies the requirement handily. I'm accumulating speakers with no plan of anything to do with them. I may well have a disease not unlike "upgradeitus".

What is the cure for this utter nonsense?

I find buying another vintage guitar takes care of my speaker buying addiction. Plus the guitar is worth a whole lot more in the long run than a speaker.

There in lies the rub, finding a good instrument for a great deal is difficult because it's a more aggressive collectors market with many more interested parties that reduce the chance of getting a great deal. I try to maintain a consistency with any audio purchase, get great deals. The result isn't always getting what I want, rather what will work and will be worth a fair amount more than what I purchased the item for. This may be frowned upon, but I do this as a safeguard. I sometimes do it just because it seems insane not to. If I find a gold nugget lying on the ground I'm not going to leave it there.

thats what happens when u get inexpensive. you get intruiged by comparing them as they aRe aLl flawed in their own unique ways at low price points.

get some real good 3-8K/pr speakers instead (IE Salk SS8s)as they will have few if any flaws, taking away the fun of "they all have their strengths and weaknesses"

I've been cleaning house of my unused speakers and I'm down to two no longer used 3.0 sets of speakers plus 5 sets of computer speakers that I'll ebay eventually. That leaves me an even two 5.1 and a 7.1 setup in daily use. :D

'Aficionado', I like the sound of that, better than what my wife usually uses -'pack rat' or 'hoarder'. I have gotten rid of two pairs of speakers in the past few years. Need to get rid of a few more to make room for new ones...

I think I'll have to show my wife GranteedEV's comment. See honey, if I spend just 3-8k on a pair I won't need to buy any more. :)

Buy better speakers and then throw the rest in the trash.

I got the same problem with amps. I got 10 amps around right now. Sometimes I sell one and later on I want to buy it back. I sold this PERREAUX 8000 B HIGH POWER MOS FET AMP 500W RMS PER CH 8 OHMS STUDIO STANDARD | eBay one a few months ago and I am missing it now. Had no use for it because that needs a 30 amp breaker but it's just the point of having it. Small apartment and no room. My wife tells me I am running a warehouse here.

Sell the unused speakers to fund new purchases... you must succumb to the dark side!

Yes I suffer from the same condition although I'm working through it. I just threw away a pair of OLD JBL bookshelves (one had a blown driver) but I can't seem to part with the pair of JBL L1's i have sitting in the basement (unused). I've been offered a fair price, but I just think I can use them again. The were soo good in their day!

You don't know me very well. I don't buy junk speakers, I buy when I'm getting something under market value. However my ultimate goal would be to acquire a pair of mid-level Thiels, but I don't have a large enough to set them up properly. In the space I have my small Thiel handily meet my requirements.

My problem is my inability to refuse a stupid good deal. I actually get a rush when I do it. It is one of the few things that is exciting to me. I should have been a prospector because finding valuable things is enjoyable to me.

I do not buy speakers new, only used.

I guess I could have used an example. If someone has a pair of Acoustic Research AR3s for $40, I'm going to buy them.

In that case, I can help you by buying it from you for 3 times that as long as they are not defective.

Sorry, I meant AR3a only, not AR3.:D
Ha ha, well that example was from my aunt. She picked up a pair at a yard sale not knowing anything about them other than that they were very heavy. Once she removed the covers (after buying them) she felt like she just sunk $40 into firewood. Lucky for her she knew I was a speaker aficionado and she contacted me. I sold them for her, she made close to $1k on the little transaction. I've had similar deals on countless occasions (not sure if the "unlucky" people believe me) but that's what keeps me buying them. It's like little investments that I get to enjoy. If I ever need to cash out I'll have plenty to perpetuate my own survival for a time if not indefinitely if I play my cards right.

By next week I have to get these Tannoy Jaguars out of this place, for free.

How am I going tell my wife this? Next week is my dead line. I don't even need them. Do you want to be the middle man, they have been hanging there for 25 years and look like new. I can't put them in my friends garage, his son ran into one of my amps with a lawnmower.

Shipping those would be a nightmare. I'd recommend Craigslist as an avenue to get rid of them. If you aren't concerned with getting much or anything out of them I
Sure someone on craigslist would love to have them. Giving them away has the advantage of allowing you to meet them elsewhere because they don't need to hear something they're getting for free (not fond of meeting strangers at my home). What are they going to do if you don't get them?

If they have a solid value and you would prefer to utilize eBay or Audiogon in order get a fair value out of them I'd recommend that route, just keep shipping and handling charges in mind.

How does one run into an amplifier with a lawnmower?
