According to MOJO, the entire Beatles catalog is being remastered, and sceduled for release sometime in 2009. Has anyone heard more about this, and in particular a more specific timeline?
I would seriously consider buying them all as a boxed set (though it would be expensive!)

I will be buying the box set when it comes out for sure. Thanks Joe

They've been working on remastering the albums for two years now. Glad they're almost done.

Man, when is this ever going to stop? Being about the same age as the Beatles, I had the original LPs (some albums were worn out & replaced), then the CDs, then the "Anthology" DVDs. Can't imagine what the big difference is going to be with another version of these recordings Guess I'm just to old to be a groupie any more.;)

I have one Beatles CD (the Yellow Submarine soundtrack) that was remastered much more recently than the rest. Sound-quality wise, it absolutely stomps the others into the dirt. (Since I also have Sgt. Pepper, and since the two CDs have some songs in common, I have had a chance to directly A/B them. The difference is not at all subtle, in fact it is night and day!)
If they do that good of a job with the other remasters, it will be well worth it!

The remastering done for the Yellow Submarine Songtrack involved going back to the original multitrack master tapes and converting them to digital, and then mixing them, so there was no loss of fidelity in the mixing. With the original release, the mixing was all done in analog, so the mixdown added distortion of various kinds.

Still, although I do agree that the Yellow Submarine Songtrack sounds better, it is not the mix people grew up with, and also for those of us who already bought all of the albums on CD, the advantage gained in buying new remasters is less than the advantage for someone who does not own them. After all, anyone who already owns the albums can already listen to all of the music, it is only the fidelity (and mix) that is different. But for someone who does not already own them, they get music that they don't already have.

If I did not already own the CDs, I would wait for the new releases, and then wait for reviews of them, to buy. But as things are, they are going to have to get incredible reviews to tempt me.

That pretty much sums it up. I have purchased the Brain recordings of the Mozart Horn Concerti on CD 3 times, because they have remastered it twice since the first CD release, and each time, it is slightly better than before. With the first remaster, they added bonus tracks, and also, I gave my old versions away to friends, so that helped me to "justify" the expense. I doubt I will ever buy it again, no matter what they do to improve it. But maybe they will come out with a deluxe multi-disc set of all of his recordings, and then I might be tempted...
