Be careful with Spotify: Can't Cancel Services

I signed up for the Free 3-month trial of Spotify back in January to give it a shot. I attempted numerous times to cancel out the subscription prior to the trial end date with NO success. It takes you through a series of screens asking why you're canceling. The system apologies to see you go and prompts you to upgrade to premium services next time you login, though you do NOT get a cancel confirmation code. I thought that was odd in itself.

When I logged back in, I noticed I was still signed on to their premium paid services. I sent several emails to confirm my cancellation and was sent automated responses thanking me for my email and that they would followup. No followup occurred but I noticed yesterday I was charged $9.99 for their service. There is no way I can find to delete my credit card from their system and they don't have a phone# to call to complain. I did a Google search and found several threads of people complaining about the very same thing.

This is a real shame since I like their services and regularly discuss them in articles and YouTube videos. Be warned as their customer service leaves much to be desired.

You may be able to get the charges removed from the CC, but you need to call the CC company and discuss that.

If it were me, I would probably just cancel the CC and be done with that.

Thanks Gene, Use the nuclear option - reverse the CC charge and claim it was fraudulent. American Express platinum service will help you out :p

Drastic, but cancel your card and have them issue you a new one. Then when Spotify start asking you for payment you can send them the same response "I'll get right on that..."

I had the same thing happen with the newspaper. I bought one of those "kids going to college" $20 subscriptions one time and did not renew. Soon after it expired I started getting notices saying my payment was past due. I called them and cancelled again. Then I started to receive collection notices from them... Needless to say, the next phone conversation wasn't as nice.

Try changing the expiration date for your payment details so when they go to whack the card, you'll simply get an email that the information they have on file may be incorrect.

Yea no doubt :(

Finally got a cancellation notice from Spotify but they got me for $10 so I'm gonna make use of their services this month.

I know that's the part that sucks. I just had to do it, because my card expired and they kept saying they sent me a new one "check your mail". After two months of calling them with no card showing up, I finally said send me a new card this one was obviously lost or stolen, so they issued and overnighted a new one. Then I had to figure out what all I had linked to that card, like Netflix.

Just a tip. Whenever I sign up for any of these trial services I always use a pre paid credit card with a set amount on it. That way I know exactly how much I will be out if it becomes near impossible to cancel the services. Actually you don't have to worry about cancelling when there is no money left they can't bill anymore. I never use one of my regular credit cards.

The whole auto-charge credit card arrangement makes no sense to me.
It just seems you like I should be able to contact cc company and tell them to refuse charges from Spotify (or whomever). I mean simple phone call or online.
Maybe it is better now, but last time I did this, it involved paperwork via snail mail and several weeks to process.
You can open an account or transfer thousands of dollars electronically, but if you want to stop a scammer from taking your money, you need to wait on it.
It seems like the cc company is in cahoots with the scammer , not me.
I hope someone can explain why this makes sense and save me from becoming a paranoid conspiracy theorist. :confused:

Had that happen with Direct TV. What they didn't know is that I record all my conversations with a plug-in for Skype.

They started playing the song and dance. At first there was no documentation on their end of the call ever happening. I had them escalate and talked to a 'Senior Supervisor'.

I let them know that I had the call call in question recorded. Played it back for them and problem solved.

I also use Screen-Cast-Omatic. Just fire that puppy up and record the cancellation process. I had to do this with Drop Box. It's a frustrating process with them.

A bit off topic question..... what didn't you like about Drop Box?
