Not sure why but out of nowhere my ps3 keeps stalling when i paly BD's. The movies dont have a single scratch so I know its got to be the laser right? Is it just dying on me? A movie will play then stop and when it starts again it will be anywhere from 5-20 min ahead in the movie. A friend suggested a hard reset. Whats the best and easiest way to backup my stuff to do this. I have about 10 cd's and a bunch of photo's on it. I also paid and downloaded 3 full movies from PSN. Any thoughts?

Do you have a 40G from last year? Those ones seem to be the worst at laser failures.

Its the 60G. It is pretty old. I mean I got it like 2-3 months after the orig release.

It sounds like the drive is just starting to die on you, but I can't imagine that being *too* difficult to replace? I'm sure someone could take care of that for you. If you've had it since right after release, that's a pretty good amount of time.

It sounds like the laser. Even though the 40G was the worst offender, the 20G and 60G were not immune to the issue either. Sorry to hear it. I have not tried to re-download any of the anime I bought, but game saves and downloaded games and content will show up in your account and you can download them again. Movies (episodes in my case) did not show up in my downloads. Not sure if the movies will be backed up by a backup either. The music you can just copy to an external drive, and I would back up game saves for sure manually if possible.

Last I did a search it sounded like none of the protable hard drives that connect via usb were compatable witht he PS3. Is this true. Cause if I could just grab a external hard drive and save everything I would probably just grab a new p3s or pay for mine to be fixed. Thanks for the reply's!!!

All you have to do is format a USB drive to FAT32 and it will work fine with the PS3. I used mine to back it up, but my restore failed. I had saved some stuff manually to the drive (game saves) and some of those worked, but others did not. Note: you cannot copy movies or installed games to a USB drive, only save games, music and non-copy protected video.
