I ordered it because rmk said it was awesome. I think someone or other, maybe a friend, said that it is more violent(?). Animals preying on other animals?

It is from the same people who did Planet Earth, so it should be good as well. There should be a thread here on it already.

That's Life ... :p

But seriously, the first disk of the series is awesome. There are some really great moments in other segments but I have several to go. I keep falling asleep and that is not a commentary on the program, I'm just tired from too much work :).

What about the Opra vs. David Attenborough versions comparison?

Some people just hated Opra Winfrey and said she ruined it.

I'd rather have a decrepit old man than an egotistical overweight black lady telling me stuff for hours....

The series is excellent and while like RMK I haven't been able to watch the whole thing yet but from what I have seen it is as good or better than Planet Earth. However the audio and video are a little different where as Planet Earth has 1080P 24P with DD audio, Life is 1080i 25 or 50 with DTS-HR audio. From what I can see Life actually looks better than PE though.

The Discovery Channel version with Oprah is 1080i, while the BBC version is 1080p, just like Planet Earth was.

Do you own it? I do and mine is 1080i. :)

Maybe you have a different version. Also Life was shot with different cameras that PE thats why it is a different rez and fps.

From blu-ray.com http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Life-Blu-ray/8271/

The BBC version of Life arrives with an at-times breathtaking, altogether stunning 1080p/VC-1 transfer; one that boasts gorgeous colors and remarkable detail, and puts most other nature documentary presentations to shame. Still, comparisons to the series' 1080i Discovery Channel release are the most inevitable and the most unavoidable. Simply put, the differences between the two aren't earth shattering -- in some instances, our beloved little "p" may as well stand for "placebo" -- but they are notable. There are plenty of scenes and shots in which the tiniest strands of animal hair are crisper, distant foliage is more refined, and the craggly crevices of rocky ravines are more revealing. In fact, the whole of the image struck me as more stable and, for lack of a better term, more tangible. But that boost in clarity comes with a small price: the Natural History Unit's photography is sometimes beset by more obvious source anomalies. Errant noise is more apparent, the faint vertical lines that plague the series' slow-motion sequences are more visible, and intermittent softness still haunts the NHU's trickiest shots (particularly those involving extreme weather or harsh conditions). However, the vast majority of these anomalies trace back to the inherent limitations of the team's equipment and the subsequent shortcomings of their photography, not the integrity of the studio's technical transfer. Banding and artifacting (both of which pop up from time to time in the 1080i Discovery Channel version) have all but been eliminated, black levels are a tad deeper, definition is slightly sharper, and sprawling vistas pack a bit more punch. The overall upgrade isn't as bar-elevating as some will claim (most viewers who overlook the small disclaimer on the set's back cover won't even notice that a single episode, "Plants," is inexplicably presented in 1080i), but it does give the BBC transfer a worthwhile edge over its Discovery Channel cousin.

I find it interesting that you found it necessary to specifically mention the race of the woman that you didn't like, but not the race of the guy you did.

That said, I watched the whole series when it was on Discovery and didn't find Oprah distracting like others have claimed. But I haven't heard the BBC version to compare. I like David Attenbourough, but my wife prefers the Sigourney Weaver version of Planet Earth to the BD version. David Attenbourough reminds me of my grade school days. It seemed like he did the voice over for all of the movies we watched in science class.

Just calling it like I saw it. You didn't say, "decrepit old white man", but you sure said, "egotistical overweight black lady". How does anyone's race have anything to do with their effectiveness as a narrator? But you felt it necessary to point that out. Interesting.

I don't like Oprah.....nor do I like Pelosi....now the universe is balanced and we can go on about our lives.

Why can't they use babes with sexy voices as commentators for once????

Why do they feel the need to use old women or old men?:D

I would settle for Darth Vader as commentator.:D

If Opra were sexy and had sexy voice, I would love it.:D
