The real hunger games
Clearly this was repackaged and sold as the Hunger Games. Hunger Games took it in a slightly different direction, but this one seemed to spend a lot more time on the characters, despite the fact that there were more than twice the "competitors". You only get to really know the main characters, but also get a glimpse of how these kids fit together (because the story was already developed in the book and the Manga). This was one aspect that is much more interesting in Battle Royale is that the competitors all know each other because they are classmates, and that factors in to how they align and interact with each other. The way the clique system weighed in on who you help or don't help and who you go after added another layer to the story IMO, though the story still wasn't spectacular. Hunger Games had high production value and it was pretty decent, however I was more entertained by Battle Royale.
Teacher Kitano: So today's lesson is, you kill each other off till there's only one left. Nothing's against the rules.
Kyouichi Motobuchi (student): If I survive, can I go home?
Teacher Kitano: Yes, but only if everyone else is dead.
It is on Neflix and Amazon.
