When installing bass traps do they have to be the entire floor to ceiling in the corner? Can they be only the top corners? (Think large corner only crown molding) Also are bass traps effective slightly at deadening?

It depends. The shape and size ofthe room. Furniture, carpet, rugs (to a lesser extent) all play in. If you're having a tough time deciding how much then buy the minimum amount you think you'll need and add and build in until you're satisfied. Trust me you can over-do room treatments and literaly suck the life out of the sound.

Acoustimac.com and GIK.com are two sources you should be familiar with.

O, and my bass traps only go halfway up from the floor as you can see in the avatar.

Mine are four feet high and centered vertically on my eight foot walls, in two corners because that's all I have without doorways. They help so the best you can do will be better than nothing. Probably.

Thanks guys. I am mostly looking to deaden the room a little. It's hard wood (laminate) with a rug and futon.

I stuffed some hanging artwork with some extra insulation I had laying around, and I have a larger thicker rug that I am going to use after it gets cleaned.

Those little things seemed to really cut down on "empty room" echo sounds.

It depends on the products you buy - some are made to absorb bass and high frequencies (and are still called bass traps) - while others might be 'bass only' traps. Best to check with whichever manufacturer what would be best for your space. Since you don't have much treatment in there to start, a panel that is broadband in nature, that is, absorbing highs and lows, would probably be best.
To get a grip on how different types of products (panels, bass traps, diffusors, etc) can change your room, I'd recommend checking out this article I wrote on decay times: http://www.gikacoustics.com/understanding-decay-times/

I've got the bright and shiny wood floors myself, and GIK definitely solved my problems. You can also send measurements, and photos and have an acoustician recommend products based on your listening preferences.
