I've just discovered this forum. Sorry if this is a dumb question. I'm considering purchase of my first surround sound receiver. I'm confused about bass management though. My system will have full range left and right front speakers, and "small" center and rear speakers. I do not have a subwoofer. If I set the front left and right to "Large" for bass management and the center and rear speakers to "Small" for bass management, what happens to the bass frequencies for the center and rear speakers?

Do the bass frequencies go to the "Large" ,or full range, front speakers, or are the low frequencies for the center and rear left and right lost?

Thanks,
Milt

While I can't speak for every receiver, I think it's safe to say that most will route low frequencies from the center and surround speakers set to "small" to the main L/R speakers if they are set to large. Nothing is "lost".

My limited experience leads me to believe:
Bass will dump to Sub.
If no sub, receiver may (should) have option to dump bass to Large speakers.
Some receivers may require subwoofers for adequate bass managment.
