Ok, here's the problem. I have a Velo DPS 12 that I've been very happy with. I share a small semi-detached with my girlfriend, but since we're both students, we decided to put the basement up for rent.

That means, my setup has been moved up to one of the empty bedrooms. Before the move, you could feel the bass shake your innards and the foundation when it was on the main floor. Now, it's lost its swagger. Turning up the sub makes it boomy as well. I've moved the sub around and even in the best positions, it's not going down deep enough like it was downstairs. The bedroom is fully carpeted, while downstairs had hardwood floors. So I don't know how much of an effect that has. What can I do? Money is tight since I'm a grad student so I can't afford to spend thousands on room treatment.

I’d say you’ve encountered a standing wave issue and the pervious sounded a bit larger for the frequency wavelengths to travel. Just preserve with what you got for the time being and do a few experimentations with moving the sub around the room even as far as placing high off the floor towards a corner on a stool might give a little extra low end tone.:p

Well the nice part about room acoustics is does not cost THOUSANDS. :) I am sure a room like yours could get 75% of the way there for under $1000.00.

If you would like post some pictures and room size and lets see what you have going on.

I'll also suspect that the room downstairs was probably less accurate and had a much longer decay time. This doesn't mean that the current room doesn't have it's own issues, just that a basement with concreate floor and walls really can't absorb anything so it's an echo chamber for all frequencies.

The current room is damping some of the waves and not ringing as long. It'll take you some time to find the best seating and sub location to work in this room.

Yea I would say it depends on the size and wall configuration of the new room compared to the old one.
