Bass floating about 1ft above listening/seating position...how do I bring it down?

Like the title says: my bass is floating about 1 foot above main listening/seating position - what can I do to lower it? The bass is positioned for the best response, however it's floating. Any ideas gang?

Check into the Auralex SubDude or Gramma depending on the size you need. It will probably work the best out of all the options. It is very affordable too.

Bass Floating By?

Move your theater out of the lake?:eek::D

Seriously, the Auralex sollution is one I'd also suggest. The Gamma is larger and cheaper. I'm using two SubDudes under each of my HSU VTF-3HO's. They worked great for decoupling the bass from the floor.

You have standing waves that coincide with the distance from the floor/ceiling- what are the room dimensions?

Your head position is at one of the null points in the room. Move the sub to another location. As you've already discovered low frequencies tend to collect in some spots and avoid others. Bass traps in the corners may help too.

Sub crawl?

Have you tried the "sub crawl" ? You subwoofer may be located where the standing wave is giving the appearance of 1 ft above listening area. Simply relocating the sub to a better position may solve your problem. Also, have you used an SPL meter to set your levels?

Good Luck! and Take Care! Peace,

Forest Man

P.S.- Also, an upgrade to an SVS sub or subs may be in your future .

I've done the crawl - apparently the crawl lied to me! LOL! I'm attaching an interesting picture - after doing some walking around the room, while playing some clean-bass music - I discovered the following. (see attached image)

And yea, I'm planning a .2 upgrade. :D

Dj Reef's system makes me feel funny down there when I look at it. Kind of like when I used to climb the rope in gym class. LOL

After discussing the problem with Bryan Pape (GiK Acoustics over at hometheatershack acoustics) I followed a few suggestions there, here, everywhere.....Well, after playing with the height of the sub, I was unsuccessful at getting the bass to settle within the listening level.
Played with the phase...and I moved the bass to the other side of the monitor and no dice.

I even brought in an "expert" (see attached) and even she was unsuccessful.

Sounds like it is time for the SubDude or Gramma. I see you have hard floors from the Mini-Technician picture. That should have been the first sign to get the subDude/Gramma.

Actually, it's not hardwood - it's carpet over concrete slab...but I'm thinking that I'll need the SubDude anyways!

Oh my apologies. In that pic of the Mini-Tech it looked that was a throw rug then near the top of the pic it looks like a hard floor like concrete or tile. Sorry for the mix-up. Good news though... I heard SubDudes work well on carpet over concrete too. If you don't mind when you do get it in and set up could you post back at this thread and let us/me know how it worked? TIA
