Why can't the dvd-a or sacd formats transmit their audio signal via a digital audio(toslink, I think?) or a digital coax connection?? Isn't this how dolby 5.1 is transmitted from a dvd player to you reciever?

It's a proprietary gobldy gook thing. Both formats require 6 seperate analog signals becasue of copy right issues. From my understanding both formats are capable of transmitting their signal over a digital connection but they won't allow it. Some Denon DVD players will transmit DVD-A over their proprietary digital link known as "Denon Link".

It's all about politics.
