basic ceiling speaker set up

Hi,

This is my first post and I hope that it isn't a repeat. I'm in the middle of some home renovations and I am putting ceiling speakers into my dining room/living room. The room will not be my main home theatre but rather a place to listen to some casual music. The room is long and narrow (35' x 9')

I have four ceiling speakers and I want to position them best around the room so we get optimal sound. I am going to just put them in as two left/right speakers and not worry about surround sound or rear speakers (correct me if I'm wrong).

Should I place two in the dining room and two in the living room or should I evenly place them down the middle of the two rooms? I was also thinking of placing one at the dining room end, two in the middle and then one at the living room end.

I guess my ultimate question is should I treat the dining room as a seperate zone as the living room or should I try and create one big room of sound?

I'd appreciate any input that anyone has to offer.

I would think it would be better to arrange the speakers in pairs in each room rather than as a line of speakers spanning both rooms. Even with the speakers being above your head in the ceiling you will still get some sense of stereo separation and separate left and right sounds and if you line them up in a straight line I think that would be lost.
