Basement reno, new layout and speaker recos?

Hi all,

Wondering if I can receive some suggestions on our basement reno layout and speaker placement. We are moving from a planned 7.1/7.2 setup (first pic) with the couch in the middle facing the far wall, to the second pic of couch against the side wall.

Would there be any benefit from a 7 speaker setup with the second? We will have in-walls for the fronts and in-ceiling for the surrounds, no compromise there.

Any thoughts?

TIA

I prefer option #1, couches against walls aren't good acoustically and surround placement is difficult. In either scenario, I'd be more inclined to do a 5.1 setup instead.

If you're rethinking the Def Tech, I'd seriously consider the Atlantic Techs that I mentioned previously.

Thanks, I agree. But after last night's discussion with the powers at be, I'm not sure I have a choice any longer. LOL.

I saw those Atlantic Techs and they look like a great deal. Thanks.

Maybe you could point out that there'll be bad reflections (not really) on the plasma from the window behind the couch.

I so absolutely agree with Rat about orientation (though I'd still do 7.1 provided the first plan, with ceiling mounted bookshelves). What is her reasoning, assuming that either plan does not take up more floor space? Having the system symmetrical and lengthwise, well that is the most important first decision that can be made IMO, and you're about to reverse that decision.
