Hello!

Yes, I am a complete newbie to anything audio....

I just bought some speakers:

Kenwood KS-2200HT-B 5.1 Speaker set - black 5.1 system

mainly for use with my laptop and maybe ipod.
When they arrived they just have bare wire connections. I oculd connect these to the speakers but here's my question...

Is there any way of connecting the bare wire at the other end to my laptop or to an iPod? preferably not too expensive :)

That won't work. Computers and iPods don't have an amplifier that can drive speakers.

As stated above, you would need an amplifier between the two items.

When you buy cheap PC speakers, they include a small amplifier inside the speaker, or sometimes the subwoofer, which powers the speakers. The audio comes in on the 1/8" mini-stereo connector and then is amplified for playback on the computer speakers.

When you get real speakers, you also would typically get an A/V receiver, or an amplifier which lets you hook up your audio sources to it.

Not sure what you consider expensive, but for under $100 you can find amps on eBay pretty easily.

There are (literally) thousands of amplifiers on eBay right now, and you should find one that hits your budget and ask about it. Some will be significantly better than others.
